I love Nona.

I spent 3 years in Italy. I heard it all the time and fell in love it it.

Then, I was watching the Food Network while I was pregnant and Giada DeLaurentiis was doing a show from Italy. She was walking down the street by a clothing store and saw a photo in the window...it was of her grandmother!

So...she asked a tourist to take her photo with it. She turned around and said, "Ciao, Nona!" There was something so sweet about that moment. I fell in love with the name then.

My sil is named Nona but she is spanish.... funny that you mention that.. I was driving down a road that I had never traveled yesterday and saw a big restaurant called Nona.. and it was Italian... so now it's confirmed Nona is Italian and my sil is lost.

holliberri

Who is going to tell your SIL!?

LaurieS

Not I... I don't speak Spanish and omg her English.. it's like Spanish with an occasional English word tossed in.  But she's very animated... and a hoot to be around.

My nephew's other set of GPs are Oma and Opa, and so are my niece's!

I love Grammalu. That's such a nice twist.

I don't care what they call me as long as it isn't a rude name in DIL's native tongue. I feel stupid for ditching foreign language class :( Hey, the surf was up. What's a girl to do?

Pen.. you didn't

I grew up in Ft Laud, FL... the surf was up a lot... shame that area has changed so much.. drive-in movies... the beach.. surfer boys.. my 67 mustang...  My dd said that she wanted to go back in time and be  a hippy .. I said well I was far from a hippy, but I was a little care free.  Your foreign language had more to do with nautical terms :)

My parents are MeMaw and PePaw, given to them by the first grandchild and the rest of us followed suit.  The paternal GPs are Nanny and PaPaw, they picked their own.  My one set was Grandma and Grandpa when they were living.

Mine is MeMe and the other GM is GiGi.  I picked mine because it was different than all the others and I knew her Mother wouldn't have encouraged her to call me anything.  But I would have preferred to let GD pick.

I've always liked Mamie.

But are tradition is for the first grandkid to pick and the other gk's just seem to follow suit.
