It's called "Way Back Machine."   ;D  ;D  ;D

But seriously, Dr. Perricone was on a public tv fundraiser and he mentioned the anti-inflammatories DMAE, Alpha Lipoic acid (50 mg per day) and Vit C Ester. They come in capsules or as creams, available at the health food store for a better price than his signature line of products. Also eat lots of salmon, blueberries, nuts, veggies, flax seeds/oil and drink plenty of water. Avoid inflammatory foods. I do notice a difference when I am disciplined and consistent.

I bought the expensive "stretch mark" wrinkle cream at a big box discount store and used both tubes. I didn't notice an extraordinary change one way or the other. My gorgeous friend who is a former model and actress also tried it and was very disappointed.

My skin care specialist (haha, a woman I got a facial from once at a spa) used a mild acidic peel, glycolic acid I believe? I bought some at the HFS as well since it was much cheaper than the Perricone or spa products. I need to get some more and get back into my usual routine.

Dr. Oz showed a real home remedy for skin care which I use once every week or so: crush 12 unbuffered aspirin into the juice of 1/2 a lemon and grind together making a smooth, thin cream. Apply to the face avoiding mouth (ick) and eyes (ouch.) Leave on for 10 minutes and remove with a mixture of baking soda and water (it will fizz and sting a little.) Rinse with clear water and apply moisturizer. I don't think it targets wrinkles but it sure makes my skin clear and soft.

I always turn to Consumer Reports when I have a question like this, because they do extensive comparative tests in a laboratory.  Here is what they say about anti-wrinkle creams

I have two things that work really well for me...a dimly lit room or a guy who can't see very well anymore. If you can combine the two...Joila! No wrinkles! (Of course you can't count on a particularly lively evening, so you have to keep your priorities straight.)

I just saw this and had to share:
#6: Apple Cider Vinegar in Water
Well, this remedy won't diminish your wrinkles, but it will bring a lovely, rosy glow to your face.

LOL Luise, it always is a grand idea to keep them in the dark, but tht does not always work during the daytime.

Get this one, I remember my Aunt once a week would walk around for an hour while doing house cleaning with her hair tied back with a "babooska" and mayonaise all over her face, that was her facial..?

And Thank You Seasage, I did listen to the consumer report and found it interesting......

All my retired friends, men and women alike, almost immediately looked 20 years younger upon leaving their jobs. I like that wrinkle remedy the best, but I can't afford it.

No, I can't say I have....but I have friends that swear by preperation H instead of the high-priced instant wrinkle lifters.  They say it doesn't do anything long-term, but is great for temporary wrinkle fixes and puffiness, and much cheaper!

So do you flash your butt at people so they can see how unpuffy and wrinkle free it is? I'm so confused.

Ok, so now that we have got on this subject....you guys got me started.

When I was in my early 20's, I worked for a major drug store chain in the store part.  The Pharmacist one day came up to the office and was laughing so hard he was crying.  He sat down and said, "Ok, I hold patient confidentiality to a very high standard, but I have to share.  I just had the husband of one of my female customers call in.  He wanted to know how to ease his wife's pain.  I looked up her file and saw we had filled a prescription for yeast infection suppositories.  He said they were hurting her.  I told him to try a little vaseline if they had it, to make them easier.  He called back in a few minutes and said that didn't help.  He then said that she told him it wasn't the size that was hurting her, but the metal part was cutting her.  I very calmly explained that she needed to remove them from the foil wrapper first!"   :o

Might be OK to use.  After all, a lot of people are using guanine as face cream these days. http://blogs.smarter.com/fashion-beauty/2008/05/19/asian-skincare-secret-bird-poop-in-face-cream/

It's said to "exfoliate, balance and soften" the skin.

I always think of my wrinkles (you can see them up close in the picture I put into a post on "Luise's New/Old Romance" under Grab Bag)....as a road map of my lovely, long life. I revere them and think I have earned them. See what senility has to offer? It's not all bad!

Excuse me Luise, but you are the very least senile person I know of, and that includes most of the people in my circle under 25.  So that dog won't hunt.

But Pooh, yikes!  Preparation H on my face?  Did I read this right?  What side effects does it have?  Whoosh, I'd have to have several glasses of Laurie's wine to get into that one.  Then I might have to see a therapist to figure out what I did to my face and why I was drinking so much!  I mean---does it shrink---what????  Maybe it shrinks my wrinkles (I have few) but also maybe my eyepits?  Do my eyebrows shrink?  My brain---in trouble already?

Barbara Cartland, the British romance novelist (very successful but put down by her relations on Princess Di's side because of her un-cool profession of writing trash), said that when you get to a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your figure.  I've lost ten pounds and I can already see it in my face: wrinkles.  Barbara chose her face.  A wise woman.

A neighbor a few years ago went on Atkins as she understood it, where she basically ate bacon and vegetables.  When she got done, she was thin (er), but she looked 90.  Her face looked like her son's SUV ran over it multiple times and left tire treads in different patterns.  Yuk.  I think all that bacon salt leached out whatever was left of her estrogen.  Bacon is really bad food, not intended as a main course or constant snack.  I remember her announcing proudly to me one afternoon, "It's time for my snack, I get to have four slices of bacon." Uh huh.  And it's all out there now on her face, every wrinkley slice.

I did see Jane Fonda on Oprah recently and after what was, I am sure, a $100,000 face lift, she looks fabulous.  OK, she's 70, and she looks 50. And she is thin, ladies, thin and thinner.  But no matter what she does, she cannot keep her husbands.  They leave her like flies desperately fleeing a swatter. Looks young, is old and alone. Had a million implants, etc.   Hmmmm.  There's a real lesson there.

Self-acceptance has never been a strong suit of women.  We are always trying to look better.  When do we achieve self-acceptance?  If not in older age, then when?  In heaven?

Having said all that, I'll give you the name of a fabulous product I've been using for fifteen years since a dermatologist told me it's the very best on the market.  It's called DML-forte.  You have to go to CVS or a similar drug store, go to the pharmacy, and no, they won't have it.  If the clerk
doesn't recognize it, ask her/him to look it up in the book and order it for you from general chain supply.  This generally takes about 1-2 days.  This stuff is Eucerin without the grease.  It's the best, most hypo-allergenic on the market.  I get a little eczema on my hands once in a while and this relieves the pain and itching overnight.  A little pricey, about $13 a tube, but this is nothing compared to department store ripoffs at the cosmetic counters.  Try it, you'll love it.  Use it on your face, your hands, even I bet on your hemorrhoids.

I've also learned the best moisturizers are those that you can turn the bottle upside down, and if it comes out slowly in a small glop, it's OK.  If it pours out liquidy, forget it.  Anyway DML eliminates all that expensive experimenting.

I'm lucky I still have smooth skin (unless I lose more weight.).  I also have almost no age spots.  Staying out of the sun is key.  Also getting born with dark hair and the olive-type skin.  Not cool in high school, but very cool now.

Brunettes really do have more fun, at our age!

That's the good news,

Love this thread,

Kathleen

I'll take senility to, along with serenity, stability and memory, and a body by Fisher, however, that will never happen....talk about everything going south...I'm so far south, I'm making grits every morning...and my friends ask me where the accent is coming from?  ::)

Faith,

Back to square one: "the teeth thing."

I was supposed to have a tooth implant on Jan. 25, a big deal with a sinus lift.

Then all this garbage about the gravel pit came up, plus everyone in the dental surgeon's office got bad colds this week, which counter-acts
implants because, as I understand it, you aren't supposed to sneeze for two weeks to the rest of your life.  That lets me out.

So today I called and it was agreed I would wait until March 8.  This is the third time it's been re-scheduled.

So I told the "OR Manager," by March 8 it's been nine months since all this started, so when I come in I expect either an implant or a baby.

Anyone been through a successful tooth implant with sinus lift?  How about a face replacement?

Kathleen

Kathleen,  I've never heard of a sinus lift, what is that?
When I was in India I met a couple who came there and got some dental work done.
The guy got two implants and his wife got some new crowns in New Delhi and said the
Dentist was excellent.

Hi Kathleen,  Thank You for the heads up regarding the DML forte, I did read up on it and yes, noted the 5 stars as well.....I think I will take a gander on this, better than "Prep H"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL... ::)

I have never been crazy about Jane Fonda and you are right she has had more husbands than probably Liz Taylor or they are neck to neck in the race.  But then thats Hollywood... The Rich and the Famous...

Kathleen, I have never heard of a sinus lift myself...and I would definiately research that before going thru with it...  Sinus's are very touchy Kathleen and if you have never experienced Sinus trouble, you dont want to start.....Please, just dont take your Dentists word on this---check out all the ramifications before proceeding.

And YAHOOOOO  congrats on your 10lb weight loss and yes of course the first place where is shows is your face--so drink lots of water...we dont want NO prune faces on WWU here... ;)  And bacon is horrible for anyone extremely high in cholesterol, greasy and bad for your heart...not good...not to mention that I have not really heard many people raving about the Atkins Diet, and some people were actually becoming ill on his diets.  We live an learn...however my question is, whom in their right mind would acknowledge a diet being good for them living on bacon and vegetables?

My skin is smooth and could be better except of course winter does play its havoc upon my face and hands.  I also find that when I am worried or upset about something my skin changes again so yes I have to become vain and contact Jane Fonda...I have no brown spots yet either, and I am fair skinned...redish brown hair--so the sun gets me too...I just cant win...Oh well... ;D   Yes, I am going to become a bit vain...but just for a while, I have my 40th class reunion coming up this July and I cannot wait to see everyone, and I am certain we will all be comparing wrinkles and butt sizes compared to Highschool when we were busy comparing breast sizes!  And then, maybe we all grew up...

Sending Hugs across the miles...Faith

Kathleen, I personally have never tried it, but have friends that swear by it.  Yes, on their face.  They pat a little under their eyes.  If you are prone to puffiness under your eyes in the morning, they say it is great and that it also shrinks the wrinkles, making them less noticeable.  :o  I'm definitely not endorsing it as according to the article that was posted, it has side effects.  But I have friends that have used it for years.  Of course, the medicine they have me on has a list of side effects a mile long.  Every time I read them I think, "Geesh, this is worse than what I have!"  But, no problems.

I too was born with dark hair and pale skin.  At least I think I have still have dark hair according to my roots that show up every 6 weeks.  In Junior High, I earned the nickname "Snow White" because seriously, that's what I looked like, so I have colored my hair since I was 16.  I am so pale that if I ever color my hair back to my natural color, everyone that sees me immediately says, "Are you feeling bad?  Are you sick?"  I truly am that pale.  I am very prone to sunburn, I don't tan, had enough freckles when I was young to play connect-the-dots (which have faded as I have gotten older).  For the first 25 years of my life, I was in the sun all the time, playing softball and never used a sunblock on my face.  Yep, if I could go back in time that would be the first thing I would do now, but we didn't know it back then.

The biggest issue I am facing now with the Lupus (another reason they are 99% sure that is what it is) is a rash on my cheeks and nose.  It has not developed into the "butterfly rash" that many Lupus sufferers get and hopefully it will not, but I am dealing with patches of it.  So if I am understanding your post correctly, the lotion you are talking about is a moisturizer?  Not a wrinkle cream, but good for dryness?

And you guys know, that we all have to order it simply because of it's name - DML - Dear Mother-in-Law.

Pooh,

For some reason I missed your long post describing your coloring.  I wanted to answer your question about DML (LOVED your translation to "Dear Mother-in-Law.")  Yes, this is definitely an overall moisturizer for dry skin, as opposed to a "wrinkle cream."  It's good and safe for any part of the body.  Again, one of the best things is that it's not greasy.  You can put it on your hands and use the cotton gloves, or you can just wait a minute until it soaks in and you're good to go.

My oldest son just wrote me about DML asking how to get it.  I found an incredible web site, DermStore.com. Maybe we are not supposed to mention specifics like this on this forum.  But I'm telling you, I ordered two tubes of DML at less than my CVS drug store price, free Fed-X shipping, and it came within 48 hours!  I didn't even wait until I got one of those email "please evaluate" surveys!  I wrote and told them how happy I was.  I think the free shipping may have been a two-day special.  But DermStore is a clear deal.

I think Snow White sounds like a very good description of how you look, and I love it.  It's my second favorite Disney movie after "Cinderella."

Pooh, I am so sorry about your Lupus.  I had a friend who had it and she was frantic about it but you seem not to be.  Perhaps new drugs keep it well under control?  Please keep me posted.

Pooh~~I also am very fair skinned...I even glow in the dark....
Is it Lupus or could it possibly be Rosacea which is on your face?????

I did order the DML today except I ordered the moisturizing cream, thought i would give that a whirl first.

You guys, we are going down to 35-40 below tonight~~and that will be with the wind chill along with winds gusting up to 30 mph.....Ol' man winter is really here.....

Have you thought of vinegar?

Here is a list of natural home treatments  http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/treatments/a/Rosacea.htm (http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/treatments/a/Rosacea.htm)

The dml forte cream that Kathleen spoke about was praised by some for it's benefits concerning Rosacea.

Thanks Kathleen!  I will definitely order some and try it.  I can understand your friend's franticness about it, and no I really am not.  I have had 3 surgeries in ten years for torn and deteriorated tissue (my tendons keep tearing) and we always chalked it up to how rough I was for years on my body due to sports.  But a year ago I developed a very weird ridge down my arm and started having shoulder and arm pain.  Long story short, after 5 different doctors diagnosed it as "I have no idea and that is just weird" and multiple tests, no one could figure it out.  Then I started getting fever blisters.  I was getting a new one about every two weeks and a blood test came back with a raised ANA level.  My M.D. did some research and said he was pretty confident that it was lupus, and over the last year I have developed 8 of the 10 symptoms.  He started me on the medication and it has made a world of difference.  It is painful, which is why I understand your friend, but the medicine they have me on seems to keep mine 99% under control as far as pain.  The fever blisters and other little stuff are more annoying than anything.  I have one final test to undergo, as it still could be something else to be 100% sure, and that's a brain scan.  Apparently, lupus attaches to your brain and they can see it.  The only other thing he is concerned about is MS, but the brain scan would also show that as it attaches as well.  So we shall see, but I figure there is no sense worrying about it as I really can't do nothing about either one, and so far it has been manageable.  I truly feel bad for people that have worse cases as just what I experience, is very painful, so I can't imagine how hard it is on people that are in pain all over.  Mine stays mostly in my arm/shoulder area, and I get the painful pressure points at times.  One time my DH can poke me playing and it is normal, and the next it is painful.  It's really weird.

Faith, one of the other things I developed was this face rash, which is also a sign of lupus.  Full blown lupus patients can develop what they call affectionately a "butterfly rash".  Key that in to google and you will see pictures of it.  They call it that because it usually goes from cheek to cheek and across the nose and looks like the shape of a butterfly.  I don't have that, but am developing the rash on my cheeks and a couple of spots on my nose.  I by no means have it as bad as those pictures yet (and hopefully never).  It could be something else I am sure, but fits with my lupus symptoms.  I guess if the brain scan rules out lupus and MS, I'll go further.  The worst thing, and why I was interested in this cream, is as the rash starts to dry up, it is very scaly and dry so I look like I have really dry skin.  So I figured it was worth a shot!

Thanks again guys for the help.  I am ordering some today!  And if I can figure out how to do it, I will post a picture of my arm ridge so you guys can go, "Ok, seriously....that is weird!"

Laurie, No my other arm and legs are totally normal and smooth, no ridges anywhere else.  MRI's ruled out any tears, rips, etc. (Which is what the orthopedic thought at first glance.  He said it looked like my bicep had split in two).  Best they can figure is that I have inflammation in my shoulder/collarbone area because of the lupus, and it is compressing the nerves and arteries down my arm.  But....no one is sure....Lol.

Faith, yes it shoots pains from my shoulder and upper arm.  Sometimes sharp pains into my fingers, but mostly just aches from my shoulder to elbow.  The medicine they gave me keeps most of that under control.

Silly question .. how much water do you drink each day.   The more hydrated you are the more give those muscles ligaments and tendons have.  My dd tore some muscles in her shoulder, although the  pain was in her  elbow.. turns out she was  severely dehydrated.. while playing ball.. I thought I was doing the right thing by letting her live on gatoraid  type drinks.. we cut the  sodium, put her on 150 oz of water daily and it helped considerably.  I know that they have found that  medications  are tested on hydrated bodies so they work best when the body is hydrated.

I'd like to add that  I knew all this  before I went to the water drinking therapist.

Lol...not silly, valid question.  I drink lots of water.  They checked my hydration levels and they were good.  And I actually got that from playing sports.  Never liked the sports drinks and always kept water with me.

Laurie,

I've informed the company I only accept cash for my positive reviews of their product.

Tara, the DML I use is in a white 4-ounce tube with turquoise on the front of it and a slash of pink-violet. It's a cream, not a liquid.  Comes in a box with the same label on the front.

Pen, going back to one of your original posts, I watched Dr. Perricone.  I don't know what an "anti-inflammatory diet" is but I think it
eliminates sugar, fat, alcohol, etc.  My concern with him was the large amount of salmon he was recommending; he stated at one point he ate it every day for breakfast.  We have to be concerned about the amount of mercury in that much fish.  He probably has a special supply of mercury-free fish but we don't, and the experts recommend we eat it only three times per week and pregnant women less.

Does anyone know of a really good water-pik style machine for teeth?  I tried Interplak (broke quickly.)  The Water-pik sprays all over the bathroom.  I tried a Con-Air and it was good but used batteries and also broke.

Speaking of teeth, my implant got rescheduled for the third time.  Doc has a cold.  So when I do go, it will be nine months since the
first try for an appointment.  So I told the nurse, I'm coming March 8 and I'm expecting either an implant or a baby and no excuses this time.

I'm writing an update this morning about the gravel pit on "Neighbors from....."

Happy smooth skin,

Kathleen

Ok, will look on amazon again.

Laurie what strength of sunscreen do you use?  I started using Olay Regenererist    uv defense regenerating lotion, sp 15
in the last year, its part of the line recommended by consumer reports for wrinkles but you may use something stronger
than 15?  at any rate this never stings my eyes like some sunscreens.

I have a issue with dry legs and hands.  I never care for my hands and they look 20 yrs old than me.  So many of
my friends have lovely young looking hands and french manicures.  I guess I've been too lazy on that front.  Last summer I kept
organic coconut oil in the shower and used that and my dry legs were totally rehabbed, but come winter its too cold
and the coconut oil is hard.  Thats why am interested in the DML Forte

Yes, Kathleen, I'm concerned about eating so much salmon as well - aside from the fact that wild-caught salmon has tripled in price at my local big box store! Flaxseed oil is an alternative source of all those omega 3's etc. and if you put it in a smoothie you can't taste it. I've gotten used to taking it by the spoonful, but it's an aquired taste.

Dr. Perricone sure has great-looking skin, BTW.

The issue of mercury is vip.  Most people don't take it very seriously but my NP encouraged me to get tested for heavy metals about 3 years ago and I had exceedingly high levels of lead and mercury.  I've been getting iv chelation off and on since then.  My health has improved quite significantly since, I'd say I'm pretty 'normal' vs chronic fatigue issues.    Now I don't eat tuna at all, was told never eat tuna again.  Occassionally I have a bit of my DH delicious tuna sandwich but thats it.  Also, never eat farmed salmon.    I'm not sure Pen if Flaxseed oil or just the seed ground up converts to Omega 3 in all people.  you could be right.  I have some fish oil supplements from Nordic Naturals, but must admit I'm lazy about taking them.
Title: Re: Wrinkles!! Who Me??
Post by: Pen on January 22, 2011, 12:21:25 PM
Tara, I'll have to look into the difference between the flaxseed oil & ground seeds. Thanks for the heads up.

K, my acupuncturist said to avoid potatoes and other "nightshades" such as tomatoes, eggplant and peppers along with wheat, white rice, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, red meat, processed foods, etc. to help with my arthritic symptoms as they were all inflammatory foods. I must admit I haven't completely cut out some of those items yet...I mean, a good glass of red wine or a well-pulled espresso make life work living. I can do without the wheat, meat, processed foods and sugar.

Tara, where did you go for your test? I've seen online labs and wondered if they were reliable.
Title: Re: Wrinkles!! Who Me??
Post by: Tara on January 22, 2011, 02:26:33 PM
Kathleen,  I do like the hand held waterpik brand of water piks.  Have you tried the hand held one?     but I need to find a source to replace the tips, if you have any suggestions    Also, My dentist sells one for the shower which I love so I get to  condition my hair, floss and water pik my teeth and relax in  shower in the morning.   (too much information I guess ;- )    My dentist also recommends a wonderful little portable water pik which I use when traveling and even at home sometimes its:   Panasonic EW1270.  It collapses and is light weight so doesn't take up too much room but is big enough to hold adequate water to be effective.  I found it on line.

Pen:  here is a link that talks a about the dialogue that is happening re:  fish oil and flax seed oil.

http://ezinearticles.com/?Fish-Oil-Pills-Versus-Flaxseed:-Which-Is-the-Better-Omega-3-Source?&id=5411795

I sometimes like to grind up flax seed and eat it with soymilk and its pretty good.

Re:  the test for heavy metals, GENOVA is a good company.   My Naturepath does the tests and the chelation and also my nurse practitioner is very knowledgeable.   There is a protocol which if you are interested I could write to you via a message.  Doing a blood test doesn't measure more that what amt of heavy metals is in the blood at the moment and we carry alto of it in our bones and cells, so they need to do a " challenge' test  to get an accurate measurement.  There was an interesting article in the paper about how because we carry lead in our bones, when our bones start to thin out and become more porous then it is released in our system.  IMHO many many of us have this issue and don't realize it because proper testing for it is rather new.

Title: Re: Wrinkles!! Who Me??
Post by: kathleen on January 23, 2011, 07:06:13 AM
Thanks very much, Tara.  I'll look for both those products.  Yours is a reasonably shocking story of mercury.  Do you have any idea why your levels are so high?  What symptoms did it cause?  Yes would be very interested to receive the protocol info you mention and thanks again.

I'm on the DrWeil.com email message list (daily) and find he has some of the best information on all these topics.  I'm a little more suspicious of the Oprah guy/guru.  Dr. Weil is a Harvard-educated physician who  has extensively studied Asian and other medical theories, to try to come up with the best assessments.

For example, I was getting concerned about sunscreen so looked it up on and found many anti-sunscreen articles, but Dr. Weil says the benefits far outweigh any risks.  As with everything it's probably good to use sunscreen as sparingly as you can.

Does anyone know if cooked flaxseed (the ground stuff, in oatmeal, I put it in my breads, etc.) loses nutritional value in heating?

Kathleen
Title: Re: Wrinkles!! Who Me??
Post by: Tara on January 23, 2011, 09:49:19 AM
Kathleen,  I'm a big fan of Dr. Weil too and get his daily emails.

Pen, There are good fish oil companies like Nordic Naturals (my favorite) that are tested regularly.  They use something
like a distillation process that removes the toxins.  also, there is a good on line group called "Consumer Labs' that tests
all these various supplements and tells the community whats really in the supplements including the contaminants.
for example, with my issues of heavy metals I was shocked when I read on consumer labs that they had tested various
protein powders and the very brown rice protein powder (I am allergic to dairy)  I had purchased at the local organic coop was contaminated with lead!  Whats even more surprising is that when I had a couple of dialogues with the staff at the coop they
talked to the company that made the protein powder and were told that its very common to have lead in rice protein powder
(ie its not an issue?) and so the coop ended up putting a sign on the powder explaining the concern but didn't remove it.   The consumer lab cost about 39.00 a year which is expensive so I use it intermittently.

re:  how I got heavy metal toxicity?  I'm not 100% sure, but I used to eat sushi and lived in a small coastal town and of
course we ate allot of fish in those days about 30 years ago.  On the other hand from what I've learned we all get affected
by believe it or not by things such as  coal burning in China and also I just learned last summer there are heavy metals in some of the compost type products  one buys for the garden  (I'd like to really understand about this more) the 'Environmental Working Group' on line has alot of info on toxics in our make up, facial and body products  and there are even lead in some lipsticks.  You
can look up the "Environmental Working Group" for free.  Its not for the faint of heart.

The protocol for the Genova Labs test for heavy metals is this:  The health practitioner injects one with a chelator and then
you save all your urine for 6 hrs and take a sample of that and send it in.    My nurse practitioner has this issue as well
and she just took some chelator medication orally for her assessment.  I know a number of people in town who are working
with this issue.    There are other ways to remove the metals and one is to use a far infrared sauna.

My symptoms before were related to chronic viruses and classic symptoms of viruses including irregular energy. These seem to be gone now.  I feel lucky.

That is amazing Kathleen.  I have heard it is good for sea sickness.  Also when I was in india we drank alot of this tea
made with fresh grated ginger, fresh lemon and honey and if wanted a black tea bag.  some of us got addicted to it!
now that I'm home I've been drinking fresh ginger with black tea and stevia and it is sooo satisfying.

I love fresh ginger tea. It does work for all kinds of nausea, plus it is warming and can boost your internal temp thus warding off illness if you tend to operate at a low body temp (that would be me.) I grate fresh ginger into a mug, add fresh lemon juice, a dash of cayenne, and honey or agave nectar. Add boiling water, stir and enjoy. Warms ya right up!

I'm a hummus fan too Pen.  re:  agave, the lighter type is the best I think.  Its a nice product and can be
used to make desserts and it doesn't have the strong taste that honey has, more neutral.  I used it recently
to  make cornbread and it was good  ;- )  sounds weird though probably.  The only down side is that while
I think of it as so healthy --   Rebecca Woods a health writer and nutritional consultant recently said it was
closer to high fructose corn syrup.  Oh I hate to hear that!   I'm in denial.

I don't know, Tara. My consultant says it metabolizes differently and is a good alternative for people who can't tolerate sugar. When I use a little agave (it doesn't take much for sweetening) I don't get that immediate jolt and light-headedness I get from sugar. Vegans use it instead of honey because it's not an animal product, and it doesn't have the funny after taste of stevia.

It's probably best to eat a raw, natural, unsweetened diet - but kind of impractical for most of us. We all do the best we can  :-\

Every day new studies come out refuting the old knowledge, and then another one comes out a few days later supporting the original knowledge...and so on. I've decided to try to do what makes me feel the best, staying open-minded to new ways while not immediately jumping on every new trend.

Tara, I, too, go through periods trying not to eat sugar.  It's my worst downfall, coming from a family of many wonderful bakers.  I equate warm cookies with love.  I wonder if it's really so bad outside of the empty calories.  What's more heavenly than chocolate brownies straight out of the oven?

I'm on pins and needles waiting for the latest health guru to discover the absolute human nutritional need for brownies.  (Well, we made it with red wine, didn't we?)

Ginger is what my friend's had us take when we were going on our first cruise.  It combats sea-sickness.  So we bought some candied ginger and about 4 hrs before getting on board, starting eating it.  It worked!  Sucked on it off and on the first day, and then didn't need it after that.

Kathy,

My knee pain is not due to an injury, just very early arthritis.  It wasn't bad but I could see that it could get worse.  Ginger really helped.  I tried this chondroitin once and it seemed to do nothing.  I'll have to look up the strength; I basically just ordered some capsules from the Vitamin Shoppe.  They give great service, and I think their vitamins are fresh---anyone know anything bad about the Shoppe?  I was less impressed with their probiotics, and bought mine at Whole Foods, but what high prices.  (The store has been nicknamed "Whole Paycheck.")

Hope yours isn't bad.

Pooh, put some of that ginger in your Margarita.  Then you have a good excuse to drink it.

Kathleen

Ginger Margarita - sounds like a stripper name  ;)

Kathleen, probiotics are expensive everywhere. I haven't found a reasonably priced one yet. "Whole Paycheck.." Love it  ;D

We've had great luck with the Pro Biotics called Acidophilus Pearls, 90 count.   I get them on Amazon through the automatic subscriptions (which you can change or cancel any time) for the price of $14.51, no shipping.

My daughter went through a nightmare trying to diagnose what was causing her abdominal problems.. they had run a couple of very invasive test and could not come up with anything but a clean bill of health.  She has increased her fiber and water along with the pro biotic because while they did not cause constipation, they did produce a harder stool... After two months she is doing great and now instead of getting sick five days a week, she is only effected once every three weeks or so... Final loose diagnoses for her is IBS, kind of a catch all but they had to call it something.

Kathy,

The ginger root I take from Vitamin Shoppe is 550 mgs, 300 capsules. If you get on their email list you can sometimes get free shipping.

Pen, the Whole Foods probiotics were $29 for 30 capsules.  I got them because they met all this criteria:

1.  High culture count (total amount of friendly bacteria) at least 15 billion (up to 50 billion, mine are 30)

2.  Multiple strains (different types) of good bacteria

3.  Choose one with at least 10 different strains, all of which should start with L or B

4.  High amount of bifido bacteria

5.  Delayed release

6.  Potency at end of expiration label should specify how many cultures are still there at expiration

I wrote this down at the end of a PBS show on nutrition.  I've forgotten the name of the woman; she's their latest guru.

Laurie, how do you get on Amazon automatic subscription and what does it mean?  Do the Acid. Pearls meet the above criterion?  All the users raved about them; they do have the delayed release but couldn't find other info matching above.

Bravo for supplements,

Kathleen

I have found that post tend to disappear when you hit send and don't notice the pink message stating that someone else has posted a message since you view it last.. if you don't rehit send, and move on then it's lost

My dd's doctor had suggested Florstor probiotics, he said that he has found this to be the best for most of his patients... We did not see any results and that was when she switched to the Pearls.  There is a book you might want to look for in the library called The Probiotics Revolution.. I found some helpful information, even if I do not believe that I will jump on the probiotics is the food of the Gods's bandwagon.  My dd's doctor felt that every American, and he did say American should be taking probiotics because of the over the top consumption of processed foods, and not just processed but foods that are not fermented.  I'm assuming that your doc recommended them due to a possible abundance of antibiotics that you will take for an extended period with your upcoming surgery.

I had already tossed the Pearls box containing all the information that you asked about.  The manufactures name should be listed on the Amazon site as well.  The 15% savings is not on all amazon products but when it is, there is a paragraph about it under the main heading and again on the far right there is an area where you can set your shipping frequency.  I've signed up for the subscription, and canceled as soon as I've received the product yet received my 15% off.
