Title: The Royal Wedding
Post by: pam1 on April 26, 2011, 07:23:13 AM
Anyone watching or following along?

I confess, this is so exciting!  I can't wait for Friday lol.  I think I'm getting a few girls together to have a tea party with our daughters Saturday and watch the DVR of it.

I have my fascinator, and I need to go out and buy ingredients for mimosas.

How long do you think it will be?

I get up that early anyhow, but I was hoping to make it to work by 6 since it's Friday.

I fully believe Kate Middleton lives in the woods with 7 little old men and that birds and rabbits talk to her. Plus, when I was in London last year I told my husband I couldn't come back because Prince Harry found me and needed me to be his plus 1 for an upcoing engagement.

LMBO Holly!

I have no idea how long it will be but you bet I'm watching every bit of it that I can.  What's a fascinator?  Is this some Royal thing?

I just love Kate Middleton, can you imagine handling that spotlight?  And doing it gracefully?  That girl has got some steel ovaries

Is she required to always wear something on her head for public events?

I think it's popular in the UK among the upper class. Just a guess, though.

Thanks Holly :)

Tara I believe it's live on the BBC channel.  Middle of the night US time.  Gotta check tonight and will let you know.  The BBC channel has been running all kinds of Kate & William documentaries too.

I just can't get Kate Plus 8 out of my mind

The entire affair is being handled gracefully.... I hope she doesn't have the mil issues that the last princess had.

Post by: holliberri on April 26, 2011, 08:27:03 AM
I guess if she has any problems, it'll be GMIL issues.  :P Talk about intimidation. Haha.

I think her StepMIL has to toe a fine line too as part of the royal family, and given her history with the Prince. They might wind up to be good friends...my guess is they can relate.
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: pam1 on April 26, 2011, 08:29:34 AM
According to the gossip rags StepMIL is very jealous.  Something about their marriage bumps Camilla down in line to seventh royal lady or something.  And there's talk of Prince William being placed 1st in line for succession of the throne.  The Royals are concerned about Prince Charles and Camilla's image and they have poor ratings among the British.

It's going to get exciting!

Post by: holliberri on April 26, 2011, 08:33:47 AM
LOL, I did some research on this...and I think...

If Prince Charles does become King Regnant...he can change her Duchess Consort status to Queen Consort if he likes.

Plus, we're not sure what Kate's title will be yet, do we? Or did I miss that part.

Do you really see Charles ever becoming King.. obviously he isn't going to outlive the Queen :)  I don't think anyone will .. how old is that lady?

I was reading this rather funny article: "Make Charles King for 1 Day." It goes on to say that it's a little unfair that his mother is living forever and that he is now not so young himself. Since he was expecting the title one day, they figured she should get it for 24 hours.

LOL.

a fascinator for my son's wedding .....lol
It's on TV here from 8AM Friday morning .
Loads of street parties going on here , all banks and schools are closed .
Already they are camping outside Westminster Abbey ...lol
St. Andrews University where they met is 10 miles from where I live , my daughter used to watch Wills play rugby .
I even queued behind him in the supermarket !! He's just a regular guy .
Just what we need as a future King , he might be 100 before he gets there though ...lol

I remember watching over and over again Charles and Diana's romance and wedding.  I was so fascinated by it.  I always found her to be charming and an incredible female.  I admired her and then later, pitied her.  I just haven't been able to get any excitement over this one.  I find myself just watching a few things and wondering how hard their lives must be to have to always be in the spotlight and being critiqued by people.
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: holliberri on April 26, 2011, 11:23:10 AM
I know what you mean Pooh. My mom got up early to watch Diana's wedding, so I am keeping the tradition. Plus, I got up early to watch her funeral service.

The good thing is, Kate is a lot older, and she's beeing dating him for 8 years.

And, dear goodness...I hope that the family will be easier on her with the rules and pressure. I also hope us crazies that love gossip know how to mind our own business (isn't that a long shot?).

I remember I saw Sarah Jessica Parker at Tahoe in 2008. She's normal. I decided to not be "that" gal that runs up to her and gushes, asking for an autograph. No regrets for giving her space with her family.

I am glad to hear that from you, LL. I feel that, you being over there, knows these things better than me.

I remember reading articles around the time Charles was 28 (and single). They raved about  him in the U.S. like we do with Wills now.

We are awfully fascinated with all that royalty we don't have here!

Post by: lancaster lady on April 26, 2011, 12:43:12 PM
William also came here for our famous fish and chips ...and queued for it , no airs and graces ....we all like him  :)
I think Kate has lost far too much weight though , gonna be a skinny bride ...just like my F/DIL , why do these girls
think they have to be skinny to be beautiful ?

I'm fine today , thankyou Rose .....
I don't think anyone knows what the Queen thinks of anyone ....she's very old school and never shows her feelings .
That's why Charles is such a wet fish , poor guy was sent to boarding school very young , brought up by nannies .
Diana showed her boys the real world , that's why I think Wills will do ok .
Wish my daughter had gone to St.Andrews Uni .....just think where I might have been going on Friday ....lol

Post by: pam1 on April 26, 2011, 05:22:12 PM
The rags are saying Kate already has plans for plastic surgery in keeping her more modern image.  I think thats what the weight loss was all about.  I'm hoping William can keep her centered in that area, he knows what Diana went through with eating disorders and body image issues.  And besides, Kate is very naturally beautiful imo.

I hope the tide starts turning in the media soon.  I already think skinny is out, unfortunately porn star look is in.  Hopefully we'll get to a more natural medium in the next generation.  Aging is beautiful, I'm not sure why they can't see that.
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: holliberri on April 26, 2011, 05:39:51 PM
Plastic surgery hasn't done anyone any favors, IMO. Nicole Kidman's forehead looks like a flat screen TV, Kenny Rogers can no longer blink and Melanie Griffith was told by her own husband her lips were obnoxious and that's why she wasn't getting jobs.

Helen Mirren? Meryl Streep? Jamie Lee Curtis? Helena Bonham Carter?

If they've had anything done, it's very subtle and they've let themselves age beautifully. Better that way.

Plus....such a bad investment. My mom had a tummy tuck and had to stand up and sit up perfectly straight for six weeks. The doctor told her that to maintain, she'd have to exercise near daily. She is now planning a second surgery because the upkeep was too difficult to keep up with. The sad part is, she looks NO different than before, and she was gorgeous before.

At least the doctor turned her away when she said she wanted implants and an augmentation. I guess he wasn't all that bad.

Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: pam1 on April 28, 2011, 07:17:24 AM
Tara, 5 am on the BBC.

I wonder about what the plastic surgery is going to look like once these people get tired of doing it or running out of money.  So much maintenance.

Thank goodness that doctor talked your Mom out of that.

I'm all for people wanting to feel and look good, I don't have much problem with the idea of plastic surgery I guess.  But for someone so young like Kate to already be thinking about it?  Kinda turns my stomach.  And it seems like those who choose to do it just go way too far.

My grandmother had her eyes tucked and that was it, she looked nice.

I had to go to a plastic surgeon when I had the surgery on my face for cancer another time on my neck.. thankful for the surgeons, or I'd be one disfigured mess.  I was just happy with getting laser and I couldn't imagine the cost of cosmetic surgery.  I was thinking about a chemical peel.. anyone ever have those?
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: pam1 on April 28, 2011, 07:25:35 AM
Yeah, I think the only problem is that once you have something done you have to go back in to get maintenance and then it's like, oh why do I just throw in a butt implant while I'm there?  LOL

Do you know they have calf implants that men get?

Oh and there was this brochure in one office that broke down the highest rates of plastic surgery compared to where people live. East Coasters get skin care, the South is primarily butt implants, Midwest and West Coast are breast implants.

I just wanted a breast transplant ... age and drooping seems to go together like love and marriage.  My dd thought she was soooo funny she said hush or I'll kick you in the boobs, then she kicks me (lightly) in the thigh and said.. see told you I was going to do it.

I know a person whose whole life changed when she had P. surgery to her face as a young woman. She feels it was because she felt better about herself...not that others felt better about her. Her features were somewhat distorted from the norm. She showed me pictures...because I didn't know her "before."

Seems like that's the underlying issure; self worth and trying to externalize it...when it's an inside job.  Unless there is something like Laurie spoke of that requires medical reconstruction.

If we externalize our value...then when we lose our looks, we are in deep trouble. That said, I would have had a "Jowel Lift" if I could have afforded it about 20 years ago when my face started sagging and I no longer looked like me...to me. Sending love...

I have about 100 pounds to lose, and have been quietly thinking about getting surgery to remove excess skin when I get to my goal weight.  But nothing implanted, and nothing above the neck.  I'm too scared of looking like Linda Evans, et al.

But did she get his name right?

Her dress was beautiful.. train could have been a few feet shorter IMO.. But all eyes were on her sister's butt in her Julia Roberts rear end shot.. I think sister kept in mind those camera when she chose her dress :)  I would have too if I had the figure those girls have.  Very pretty.. but that was only day one and like the last royal couple we will get day by day blows of their lives..  I don't fully understand the fascination that we have here in the states with England's first family... it must be the fairy tale.

I think the most fasinating tidbit was that Prince Charles (reportedly) has never put his own toothpaste on his toothbrush!  Think I will start that kind of service around here.  If that is so, he probably has someone to wipe his royal hiney!
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: holliberri on April 29, 2011, 06:40:11 AM
LOL, FAFE. I'm gald the new couple seems to be deviating from a few of those traditions and perks.

For me, I loved the work Diana did. I see a lot of her in Prince William (the foregoing the wedding registry so people donate to charity for example). Plus, they both seem like a breath of fresh air compared to the last generation, which almost seemed to make themselves easy targets for the tabloids. They both are pretty good at staying below the radar too, so hopefully our tabloids back off.

I think plastic surgery looks great when it is subtle and done right.  I would love to have some work done if I didn't feel like I was just throwing away my money because it costs so much.

Elsie and Holly, I lost a total of 90 lbs in 2 years..I did it the slow and hard way- diet and exercise, and I still feel like I can't get toned all the way.  I just feel like...man, I busted my butt, and I bust my butt every day to maintain it, it would be nice to reward myself by getting some work done.  Of course...anytime it comes up, H gets crabby...so I don't really talk about it that much.
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding
Post by: holliberri on April 29, 2011, 06:48:46 AM
Well, I have two opinions on this...

1. You look amazing in all of your photos...so I think you are perfect sans surgery.
2. If you worked that hard, surgery does seem like a sensible reward in that respect.

Congrats. Your hard work has certainly paid off.
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding

Well thank you so much, Holly :)  You just made my day!  Probably can't convince my H about that second one though...oh well.

Really though, I have seen people who have had work done and I had no idea until they told me.  Sometimes it can be done beautifully.  And sometimes I think, just love yourself for who you are.  But other days I think..life is too short to be unhappy with the way you look, so go for it.

If I had the money that the royal family has I could be equally as generous.  This couple does stand to do a lot of good things I hope they live up to the demands.. and not poke anyone with an umbrella :) Tabloids.. no I think they will be in the tabloids just as often as Princess Diana was.. everyone wants a piece of them.
Title: Re: The Royal Wedding

But, there are plenty of royals that aren't as generous. It will be interesting to see what Kate does. I think William is already well on his way.

They've been pretty accepting of the media attention (going out to thank the crowds last night). Nicole Kidman was good at that too (after she left Tom Cruise), she sent out bottles of wine and food to the photogs camped outside her home (estate) before she got married. I think that doing a little bit of embracing, ironically, reduces the tabloid frenzy somewhat. Time will tell.

Fergie and Diana were at the Royal Ascot. They poked the rear end of a childhoold or school friend of Fergie's with umbrellas. Funny, no real big deal for peons like us...but it was inappropriate for royalty at the time.

They did other "crazy" things too...I think they stole golf carts and went galavanting around one of the estate properties, if I recall. I think they had a lot of fun together besides.

Elvis was probably the most appreciative of his fans and expressed it with his time at the front gates.. didn't work for him :)

The umbrella thing I thought was a whole lot to do about nothing... but I guess they chose to live at such a high standard.

Drug addiction and affairs make for a great story though...that's when tabloids ensue.

So long as they have a happy successful marriage, I don't see the problem. If Kate doesn't know  what she is getting into...that is probably her problem by now. William went through all his parents' divorce and unfortunately his mom's death with the tabloids right behind. He's been living it for 30 years...he's done quite well. Plus, I'm not sure his dad was ever as likeable as him in the press circles; if the press doesn't like you...watch out...they can break you. He's walking that line well.

Owie! So sorry about the broken arm, Pam1!

I read this morning that the British, overall, were luke warm over the wedding...44% saying they would watch it on TV and 56% saying they weren't interested.

I forgot about it. Oh, well...the pictures and write up on CNN are nice. Funny to live such a long life that I can remember the whole big thing about the kings death, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's fiasco, Elizabeth's marriage to Phillip and then Charles and Di's tragedy. Is "Princess Margaret" still alive? She was pretty rebellious when I was growing up.

Haha Laurie.

Harry is a lot more handsome IMO.  I think William and Kate will have a heavy load.  And no doubt William has for a long time, he seems to be primed for it.  But it almost seems to me that once they are older Harry will be a better candidate.  I don't know why, maybe it's b/c he has had more chances to be a real person.  He seems to be able to make friends with everyone from all walks of life, not that William can't, it just seems to me that Harry got the "Diana" touch in the freedom he was allowed to experiece as the "spare"

They both are good guys and I think Diana would be very proud.

Sorry to hear about your DD, Pam!

And I think Harry is much better looking too...weird because when they were kids, I thought the opposite.  He had an awkward phase, but he grew out of it very well! :)

Luise,
Princess Margaret died about 10 years ago, she was 70, and had been in ill health for quite a while.  You will find Londoners love the Royals, but up north they are not that interested.  (Not everyone of course).  I also  remember the death of George VI, the Queen's accession to the throne and the coronation, but don't remember the 40's that well............Jill

What was Harry saying to William as Catherine was walking in? It looked like he was saying something about "Her dress..." but I couldn't catch the rest. He also kept trying to catch her eye after she caught up to them; it looked as if to make her laugh, but she kept her composure. He's quite a rascal, Harry.

I had to email Holly from my lunch out with my kids when it dawned on me that I've never heard a last name for any of these people.. I guess I never thought about it, but when I saw the repeat on tv and the trick was to remember his full name (which I don't understand why that is so hard) she never said a last name.  So Holly took time to explain it to me.. thanks Holly.  Ok so now what is Cher's last name?

Cher's original name was Cherilyn Sarkesian or something like it. But we can start a rumor that she and Bono were married, LOL. Oh right, that was Sonny Bono.

Thanks, LL. I know a lot of people think it's silly and a waste of money during these hard times, but there is something fascinating about the whole thing. I agree that this new generation of royals is more accessible and tuned in to the real world, thanks to Diana and now Catherine. It was a good move on the Queen's part to support the marriage; I think having a commoner join the royal family will continue to benefit them PR-wise. Plus, they've got to get some hybrid vigor going for the good of future generations of royals, LOL.

I was too young to remember why, but I cried listening to  Cher's eulogy for Sonny. I thought it was so sweet, even though they were divorced. I also remember how secure I thought his wife was to have her give the eulogy. Two classy women.

Hey Pam,

Thanks for starting this post, I may not have watched the wedding if you hadn't brought it to my attention.
It was a joy and so nice to have something in the headlines besides war.  Kate is so beautiful!  Yes, Harry a
rascal is right.

Ok physically, mentally might take me awhile.  I really haven't had time to think of my mental status, just tired right now.  I did shed a few tears yesterday as I was dealing with a situation that was horrible.  They have also assigned me to be the liason between the Chaplain's and those that need more mental health than a volunteer can deal with, so I am getting some horror stories now.  I am off for the afternoon (they tried to relieve all of us for a few hours as we will be back at it tomorrow), but still taking those calls.  Also with my GIS work, I had to plot all the damage yesterday on a map and it was hard to keep putting "destroyed" over homes.  Our final initial count was 296 completely destroyed homes, 198 with more than 50% destruction and 600 below 50%.  Those numbers will probably climb over the next few days.  I guess all the officials thought I was a little bonkers, sitting there with tears rolling down my cheeks in front of a computer, but they understood.  So I am wearing quite a few hats right now.

I was going to play catch-up some today, but I have just been ordered to get ready and my DH is going to take me out to eat, so I will have to catch up more later.  I'm sorry that we are starting all of this today with us as moderators and I will be out of pocket probably for at least another two weeks, so I am hoping that Pen can plod on without me.  I do still want to do this, and I promise I will be back.

Thank you for asking.
