I never was overweight the first 1/2 (42 years) of my life but I have been an accordion ever since. I'm 5 ft. 2 In. My closet goes from a size 6 (145 pounds) to a size 20 (205 pounds.)

In June, after that fracture and losing Val to nursing...I had climbed back up to 193. I went back on Nutrisystem which really works for me and I am currently at 173. I got down to 167 but didn't hold that line.

I really need exercise and feel I am ready to go back to Curves (my all time fitness fave) this coming week. As I wrote elsewhere, I am a groupie and do better with structure...thus my treadmill gained 10 pounds...all dust.

So, that's where I am. I will weigh myself, go back to Curves and do Nutirsystem as my plan "to become less in 2011."  And I will report in weekly whether I like it or not.

I posted the above elsewhere and moved it over here. Here's the one response I got...from our Faith.

Sounds like a plan to me Luise.....I am the same way as well I need others with me or someone to crack the whip so I exercise...and it is always so much fun doing it with a group than by yourself..inspiration at its best.....

Now, I am 5'9 (LOL~have not shrunk yet) and I am in a misses 16 which I am not pleased with at all!!!!!   2 years ago I was in a 12 and happy with that.....I have my 40th reunion coming up in July this year and would Love to get back in my size 12.

A friend of mine is a Nutrishinist and she tells me all the time...when craving sweets--go for oranges, pears and raisins.....But what is also important is to eat foods which "burn the fat."  Such as any type of nuts even a daily dose of cinnamon burns the fat......along with greens.

This is the year of me~~~~"lets go for it..."  But remember Luise, its always good to leave a few "Love Handles" available..... ;)    Hugs.....Faith ;D

5'9.  A respectable height.  I am 6'.  Used to be skinny, but as a six-footer, I have never fit into a size 12.  Oh - maybe you are talking about age 12?   Yes, in years gone by they didn't make tall girls' apparel, and so I had to start making all my own clothes when I was age 12.  Oh wait, perhaps you are discussing shoe size?  Certainly, 12 is my shoe size!!!

Hi Seasage!!!!!    A lot also depends on your bone struncture (frame wise that is)~~are you large boned, med, or small....?   My DIL is 6'1 ~~ really~~her Dad is 6'5...She is tall and Beautiful and wears a size 13 shoe~~really again.....!!!!  And I wear a size 11 shoe.....I have no trouble finding shoes at all, except in some stores, so I go on line to ebay and find great ones especially Clarks and Cole Haan which are so comfortable for me.  My DIL buys her shoes on line also and does get lucky at Payless as well.
Now she goes from a 16 misses to 18 misses a lot, but she exercises faithfully and carries her weight well, so she looks great for her height, she is large boned for a woman.....  I, on the other hand am medium boned, I have these L O N G  fingers and L O N G toes...And my Dr. will tell me~~ooops I guess you have been tipping the M&M jar over lately and of course I have.....

We simply are all different....I can remember having an awful time finding long slacks, jeans etc...and now when I buy tall in my slacks--sometimes depending on the maker its toooo long I cant figure that out.

I must simply continue to say NO to M&M's........Faith

Hi all. When I look back at photos from my childhood I wonder why I was always told I was chubby? I certainly wasn't skinny, but in most pics I'm in the normal range, healthy and vigorous. My parents rided me about my weight my whole childhood and beyond. Well, I guess it was the era of Twiggy (an anorexic British model, for those of you young'uns) and my dad was totally fat-phobic; mom had an eating disorder.

My thyroid is wacky; I've got Hashimoto's so it's up and down. If I get regular exercise, even on those days when I can barely peel myself off the couch, I feel so much better. Yesterday I went for a bike ride for the first time in 2 months. It's horrible to realize how out of shape I am, but it felt very good to be back on the bike. I will do something every day. Today is yoga and stretching, perhaps an uphill walk if I can get home from work/errands in time.

I will lose 10 lbs. by getting daily exercise of some form (yoga/stretching alternating with aerobics and weights.) A South Beach/Mediterranean diet works best for me, but I feel as if I've been doing that all along anyway, so it must be exercise and portion control that I have to pay better attention to. After the 10 lbs I'll tackle 10 more. I have to take it in small bits or I get overwhelmed.

Faith, regarding long pants I think they're now taking into consideration the very high heels some women wear. I'm glad I can finally occasionally find some jeans at the mall rather than online that are long enough, and I'm not even that tall! I'd rather hem than wear highwaters, for sure :)

Do you buy one pair for flats and another for heels? I rarely find 2 of the size/style I need or if I do it's when I'm broke :(

Title: Re: losing weight
Post by: Faithlooksup on January 10, 2011, 09:09:21 AM
Greetings Pen,    Well when you are 5'9 you really do not need heels...at least I dont.  I think the tallest pair of heels I own are 3" and thats it so no I do not buy any longer slacks then.  They dont really make them any longer, tall works for me and that is the size I buy.   Now my DIL would go into Lane Bryant for longer slacks, and then if need be you just let the cuff down as far as you can.

Hope that helps.......Faith :)

I was going to start with you guys yesterday, but I live in the South where we got hit by a snowstorm (ended up with 9" of snow here) that kind of crippled us.  I worked 14 hours yesterday and will be 12 before I am over today.  Because of that, we have had a ton of food here for everyone and I was not going to kid myself.  I have eaten everything in sight!  So, I will try to start when I know I can actually do it!

Luise, so sorry your baby is sick and I hope everything turns out well.

Luise - give You Too a hug from me - and I hope it helps to get him better real soon.
I love this topic - losing weight.  I could stand to lose about 20 pounds.  I'm 5' 3.5" and weight about 145 pounds .  I usually wear a size 8, but they are getting really snug.  I hate to exercise - really bad.  I use to love to exercise when I was young and had some energy.  Until I was somewhere in my forties I would sleep like a rock and wake up so energized I literally jumped out of bed and didn't stop all day till it was time to hit the sack again.  NOT ANY MORE!  In the past I did well with diet workshop, but they are phasing out in my area and I don't think there are any more places to meet.  I still have the materials and study them from time to time.  Last summer I made a promise to myself that I would really lose those extra pounds and stuck to the plan pretty well - till I got too busy to plan my meals closely.  To lose weight, you really need to plan your meals in advance and eat healthy.  Diet Workshop taught me to eat low cal foods between meals to stave off the hunger.  When I was most successful losing weight, I was never hungry b/c I would always snack on low cal, healthy foods.  Luise - I use to be a members of Curves, too.  I even dreaded doing that.  Finally I had to stop going b/c I tore my rotator cuff and had to rest my arm.  Now my rotator cuff is better, but I have no desire to join Curves again.  I bought a Wii and Wii fit b/c I thought it would help me exercise.  It worked for a few months - then I stopped when we went on vacation and rarely went back to it.  That was a waste of money!  We have a gym where I work - but it isn't getting used by me!  I need some motivation.  Help!
Hugs, Hope

Well. Curves isn't for everyone...but it's a way to get me out. And I like the music and the women there. Ours has a free clothes rack and a free book exchange and we do donations to the food bank and school supplies to kids.

I have eaten wisely today...Ta-da!...and I signed up for skating lessons! (First lesson, how to fall.)

Current plan...Curves - Monday and Friday...Tuesday and Thursday "Sit Aerobics class here" (stretching) and Wed. and Sat. skating.

Sunday, I probably won't be able to get out of bed!  :( To avoid that possibility, I will start slowly adding one thing each week.

Erma, be sure to have some carbs.  When I did the low carb, with a nutritionist, he cautioned me against "no carbs".  He said that your body needs them for energy, so you need some or in a few weeks, you will crash.  Basically, when your body doesn't have carbs for energy, it starts eating your fat for them.  That's why we lose weight.  You have to have some carbs to balance that effect because fat doesn't give us as much energy.  That is why he recommended we lower our carbs, but not do without them.  That way, our body gets correct energy but still num-nums our fat!

Yes, carbs are necessary but they need to be fresh fruit and fresh vegetables...not the breads, potatoes, pastas and deserts stuff. There are simple and there are complex carbs. Very, very different.

I jumped on the scales this week and I'm down 3 lbs.. not exercising enough but cutting back on portions and writing down every bite that goes into my mouth. I was starved tonight and had a whole stuffed green pepper instead of the half that I should have had.. used lean ground beef but I know I chewed up some calories with that one.

Cheers to you all!  Sounds like everyone is really making an effort.  Writing down what you eat is a great idea!  Diet Workshop advises it, but it takes some effort.  I applaud all your motivation and self discipline!  Yeah for all you go getters!  One lean  stuffed pepper doesn't sound bad!  I would consider that a great day!  Now, I ate a meatball sub from Jersey Mike's for lunch and a cheeseburger (plus salad and broccoli) from Max and Erma's for supper - much worse.  No exercise either.  I need to be more like you ladies......
Hugs, Hope

Hi, all -

Good on ya for making progress. I rode my bike one day, stretched the next, and then....

I've been very busy. When I'm not busy I'm exhausted. The news from AZ took the stuffing right out of me. DDD is going through some stuff. We've had company. It's been cold. I've had to go in early to work and stay late. Errands. Sick cat. Yada yada yada.

But, I've been eating the Mediterranean way and feeling a bit more energetic and less bloated. I refused the candies and snacks provided at a meeting the other day, and had a small salad when my friend asked me to join her out for lunch. When I'm not wearing heels I park far away from the store entrance, at least most of the time.

I do need to get serious, though. It seems that when I get busy/sidetracked it all goes to heck. I haven't taken the time to get my veggies and other food items all prepared to grab on the run. That's the first thing I should do on my next day off.

Hi girls! I just saw this thread today...can I join the weight loss thing too? I too am a dispatcher, and there are nights I am sitting at a computer a lot. This gets me very little exercise of course. This week has been tough due to weather, I am a dispatcher for electric coop, not police, but I do get calls for car wrecks (poles and lines), and house fires (disconnects). On nights the phone is quiet I try to exercise by dusting a lot in the office, or grabbing a mop and scrubbing! Mopping is great exercise! I am 5'2" if I stand up straight and tall!!! I was weighing 148 pounds last March and decided to change my eating habits to lose some of it. I had lost 16 pounds by August. HOWEVER.....holidays, winter weather, over time at work and BOOM, I quit eating like I know I should and gained back 6 pounds in the last 3 months :-[. I have size 4 pants and size 6 pants. I am again in the size 6 for comfort! I have a goal of 130 pounds. I had my dear husband help me drag the dreaded Gazelle upstairs out of the basement family room so I'd be more apt to use it. I just hope I use it for it's intended purpose, and not for a coat rack!!! Good grief. Winter makes me a bit sluggish I think. BRRRRRR. Blessings to all of you wonderful gals! Luise, I wish you and your little doggie well. We had 2 "members of the family" (kitty cats) that were almost 19 years old, and almost 16 years old that I still miss terribly.

Here's the deal Jane... You can join us and you can lose all the weight you want, as long as I don't find it.. I think I went into sympathy weight over the past 2 years.. every time someone lost it I went searching for it.. and found it and not once was there a reward being offered.

After dropping 3 lbs, I tallied up my calories at Wacky Mongolian.. to stay in the 1200 range I shouldn't have eaten breakfast and no room for dinner.. so.. I went over the alloted calories for the day.. today it's been high fiber oatmeal and coffee so far.  But dang that Wacky Mongolian has some good food.. since you get to put together your own combination of food, I went light on the beef and chicken but topped it all off with a handful of cashews.. good stuff

Yeah I'm a believer in a can of cashews is a single serving.. but stir fry isn't the same without it.. but because I was 'trying' to be good.. I had tons of broccoli, snow peas (my fav), cabbage, and green peppers.  I tried the Alli type of pill to counter some of the fat content.  I need to plan dinner now.. this is the part I dread.. dh is a meat and potato kinda guy with starchy veggies, which is exactly why we are in the bind that we are... He looked at my credit card bill.. over a 1000.00 last month in groceries he bellowed (I had tons of company but he seems to forget that company has to eat) .. where did you put 1000.00 in groceries as he is looking in the pantry.. I patted him on the stomach and said hmmm I don't know honey.

Good one, Laurie  ;D

I just re-gifted a big bag of verboten goodies to the janitors lounge at work; totally cleared out the pantry. They were snacking before the door shut on my way out! Don't say it Laurie...that the door had plenty of time to be open 'cos of my wide load, LOL!

Today I was on my feet for hours and do not feel like doing any aerobics, but I do believe I'll do some yoga stretches. We had freshly picked organic kale and spinach sauteed with garlic and olive oil for supper. Sssh...I reheated holiday tamales, too  :D

When I have it in the yard, I keep it there for looks and buy it in the store to eat. Not to decorate but to munch up. I don't like it raw, it is too strong...I steam it...and put a little nutmeg on it.

I'd like to grow something in my yard... maybe radishes, they are so expensive in the store and I don't really understand why

Kale, especially young tuscan kale, yum!  I like mine raw, thinly shredded, massaged with a few drops of olive oil, then topped with whatever I find in the fridge.  Yesterday the toppings were hot roasted red peppers, yellow tomatoes, sliced cucumbers and fresh shrimp sauteed in garlic.

I was waiting for the catch as Seasage was describing her meal... I kept thinking that at any moment she was going to say that this was a lean cuisine lunch.  I'm incredibly jealous that meal sounded great.. I'd even try kale if it was served like this.

I dont have a backyard anymore "sigh", however come spring and summer my kitchen window sills are adorned with fresh herbs that I grow....I have my fresh chives I have a pot of plain and a pot of onion/garlic which I just take cuttings from and sprinkle in salads, on meats on eggs, anything.  I grow fresh basil and thyme, by fall I cut it, dry it, crush it and store it in small jelly jars and I have that fresh for cooking...mint is also great as well....and I will grow lavender, and when the breeze is just right my kitchen smells like a lavender field...

We have what is called Farmers Market every weekend out here (spring-fall) where the farmers sell their freshly picked produce and less than what you pay in the grocery stores.  Along with homemade jams, soaps and candles.....OMG, I am really missing this, as it is 8 degrees out now with 5" of snow. :(

Oh Pooh, have you ever tried seaweed salad? Seriously, it's delicious. You can buy it all prepared and seasoned at the Asian market. Yum! Especially delicious with exquisitely prepared sashimi and some warm sake.

DH & I took a bike ride over the weekend. We had vegetable soup for dinner. I expected to be 10 lbs lighter this AM, LOL.

Ewww......no!  I have a couple of food rules.  Don't eat anything that can kill me while it's alive, and don't eat anything that makes squishy noises while it is living!

With my son dating a Japanese girl, her parents are forever sending tasty gifts to the states.  Nori which is edible seaweed, has got to be the worse tasting thing on earth... but I began to notice that even their crackers tasted like seaweed.  Who knows maybe I just never got the taste out of my mouth after the first try.

Faith, your window sills sound lovely :) I miss my garden, too. We always had tons of good fresh veg when the kids were little.

I just got this from a friend:

Dear God,

All I ask for in 2011 is a big, fat bank account and a slim body.

Please don't mix these up like you did last year.

Amen

Buy kale that has small diameter stalks if possible.  Cut off the stalks.  Roll the leaves and slice crosswise.  Thin, thin slices.  Put it all in a bowl, pour a tablespoon of good olive oil in your hand, and start massaging, scrunching.  You want to break down the fiber in the leaves while leaving behind a little bit of olive oil.  That's it.  Put it on your plate and cover with whatever you find in the fridge that moves you.  I used to cook my kale, but got tired of the same old sweet-and-sour greens.  I'm not yet tired of this prep for kale.

Well dang.. I'm only dropping 2 measly pounds a week... are you counting any of your calories?  I know I've done better in the past when I counted fat grams not calories, but it was a little unrealistic trying to stay within 10 grams of fat daily.. When I saw damage to my nails and hair I  knew that wasn't working.

When I was 20, I ate like a horse, smoked lots of pot, believed in free wheeling sex and dang I was skinny.  The new marijuana soda is about to be released http://healthland.time.com/2011/01/25/bud-in-a-bottle-new-marijuana-soda-to-launch-in-feb/ (http://healthland.time.com/2011/01/25/bud-in-a-bottle-new-marijuana-soda-to-launch-in-feb/) and at 15.00 per bottle it better be good.  I wonder if it will give me back my figure and my old, "I don't have a care" attitude?

What characters you all are!  I wanted to add that Yoplait's Light Pineapple Upside Down Cake Yogurt is realllly good.  Yum!  It's 110 calories and fat free.  Another yummy healthy treat is orange salad:  small can of drained mandarin oranges, 24 ounces of fat free cottage cheese, 1 can of drained crushed pineapple, and a package of dry orange sugar free jello.  Mix it all up and you have yourself a delicious low fat, low cal snack.  And it's pretty filling!
Hugs, Hope

I'm counting calories and realized that at 1000-1200 I was still starved.. so I bumped it up... I thought no one can constantly walk around as hungry as I was and not give in.. BUT.. today dh begged me to go to Five Guys.. don't know if you all have them where you are but they are probably the best hamburger place on earth.  So I said ok, no mayo, mustard and grilled mushrooms and onions.  10 french fries lol I counted.. and now I shouldn't eat dinner as I was at my 1200 for the day, but I had a bowl of oatmeal and a yogurt so I'm right at 1500.  We took a long walk so hopefully that will work off at least 4 of the french fries.  Why oh why did God have to make the best food the worse food?

Ladies how can I read without commenting.  The Truth!!!!  IS....my comment to Penelopes post was a backhanded, upside down, roundabout way of saying "you can do better than that"  next time you have all that wonderful food on your table your willpower will kick in and you win the battle against the bulge...I like an add currently on TV (in Australia)  that say's willpower gets stronger the more you use it..I think that is right.

a Weight Watcher  guru friend of mine told me just 5 kilo's over your ideal weight is when you need to start with their programe, and make it a healthy way of life.     I think that is about 1/2 stone I'm not sure.    Well I like the programme because it is so easy.   I don't count calories but points.      For instance I should be on around 22 points per day.         To make it easier  a booklet gives you points of all common foods and restaurant and fast foods.    I live 1 hour from our town so I couldn't make the meetings.     So I knew about the programme and bought the points book on ebay.    For example a teryaki sub is 7 points, a Mcdonalds hamburger is 18 points, serve of medium fries is 12 (that's over 1/2 my daily limit)  a salad is 2 with a bit of chicken is 4 and bread is 1.  Glass of wine 2.  You don't do without it just makes you aware!!    I think it is easy.. 6 crackers with olives, sundried tomatoes and weight watchers cottage cheese absolutely delicious only 2 points (have that glass of wine with it!!).  Throw a walk in after dinner for 20 mins gives you a few more points to use through the day.    I find it works, just easy I guess,

bye now
