Title: It's Spring
Post by: LaurieS on March 20, 2011, 07:16:55 PM
We celebrated the arrival of Spring with a yard clean up and some new plants.  I decided that I love agaves and I think I've gone agave and yucca crazy.  We went to the rock yard.. now this is insane for those of you who live in rocky areas... I spent 1000.00 on rocks yesterday.. lol.. by time I was done I had to scale back on the plants.  I still have rooms that need furniture.. but I have rocks  woo hoo ... I should be shot for spending that and actually I never would have but dh realized that the only way he was going to get the rocks he wanted was to let me get the rocks I needed for my front bed.

Now I need to know if anyone has ever tried this... I was told that the commercial weed barrier is very bad for the agave and I decided to lay down a barrier of newspaper and place mulch over that.. anyone ever try this?

Hi Laurie,

Happy first day of spring.  Your husband is a smart guy!
I love rocks and they are very expensive.

I was wondering if by weed barrier you mean the black material you put down?

Maybe you can send us photos.

Hi Tara.. it's good to love rocks.. but really that much?  Yes the weed barrier is the black mesh..  I ended up at a place called Cactus King yesterday.. It was run by some old hippie and was kinda fun to wander around in... I should have written down the names of all the plants I was picking out because by time I got home of course I couldn't remember them.. but we had a great day out and about... since dh was being so generous I even let him pick where he wanted lunch (Jason's Deli - not my favorite) ... I didn't even complain when he needed to stop at both Lowe's and Home Depot.. our homes away from home.

I've seem some beauties on the side of the road lately...

when I get them placed I will take some pictures.  The largest is 2,600 pounds ... lol.. it's not the worlds biggest but when they charge by the pound it seemed as if I was bringing home the whole mountain.

I really thought you spent a grand on river rock.

2600 lbs = boulders to me.

I forgot you were talking about big rocks.

Huh - we still have a couple of feet worth of snow on our lawn!  I can't even think of yardwork for a good month!

As for newspapers, wouldn't that act like wet leaves and just attract more bugs (scorpions?  do you have scorpions?).  Here it would be a haven for earwigs.  <shudder>

As for the rocks, just be sure to be there when they deliver them.  My MIL bought a big rock for their front yard, and the crew tore up her lawn bringing it in and they had to come back and move it, because they didn't place it where she wanted it.

I think I just found a way to augment my meager retirement when the time comes...sell rocks! I've got 'em, but they're covered in snow this morning.

Pen.. really people down here are nuts for rocks :)  I'm proof.

I hear you Scoop.. My dh will take a day off of work if need be to make sure that we both agree on the placement ... it's not suppose to rain this week so if I keep the yard a little dry it should be able to handle the machinery

So how long does snow stay on the ground up there?  I could not imagine having to wait till June to celebrate spring :)  by June I'm going to be sweating and swimming.

Well, it's snowing again this morning, but it shouldn't stick around.

We'll have the remaining, very dirty, snow for another week or two.  Our high temperature of the day is still forecast at just above freezing for the rest of the week.

But, we'll be sweating and swimming in June too!  I think that because the summer is so short, we use every last bit of it.  Our un-official beginning of summer is Victoria day weekend (the weekend before your Memorial Day) and the kids WILL go swimming.

Seriously, they look very similar to my rocks. Mine even have the lichen all over. I'm sitting on $$$. Of course, by the time I loaded and trucked all the way to Texas where the crazy people who buy rocks are, I'd eat up my profit.

They probably came from your neighborhood Pen... I paid .08 a pound... did not realize that you do not pay sales tax on rocks

I hope you are doing massive landscaping with the rock you have... but I'm willing to bet that if they were abundant I probably wouldn't be so excited about them... the trick was finding someone who can set them.. but I did, now just trying to schedule a time

Crap, Laurie is paying big bucks for rocks, and we spent all day cleaning up a rockslide.....

cha-ching $$$$$

Seriously, I'm with Pen.  We spend more time digging them up and trying to get them OUT of the yard here!

LOL.. I just can't imagine digging up rocks.. isn't it kinda hard to plant a tree.. my sister said that in NY that every spring that rocks come to the surface.. now that's a heck of a crop to grow

It is terrible to have to dig a hole for something, rock after rock.  Good news is the rocky soil keeps the soil aerated real well, so things grow very well.

Laurie I can understand your love and lust for abundant rocks..... :) :) :).....were we live (in the outback )   there are no rocks to be seen for hundreds of kilometres....I visited a friend last year and she worked on a cattle  property where the owner had hundreds of hectares of bolders and rocks.  (a bolder is a rock) :-[ :-[ :-[  anyway as a side line he sold these rocks to the city for many $$$  well I couldn't resist...  my friend and i lifted a rock (as large as we could manage in to my ute....and away I went as fast as I could )....I wasn't going to tell my husband just see how long it took before he noticed a rock in the garden!!!  he did  step around it for a week before he noticed!!     My criminal record wouldn't be to good...arrested for stealing a rock.... I was desperate for rocks and couldn't miss the chance...my friend no longer works their...darn it

Cute, guys. It's kind of cheery in a weird way for those of us who are still under gray skies threatening still more snow. It's definitely not spring yet, although we did get a hint of it a week or so ago when the fruit trees started to blossom. Now we've had to fire up the woodstove again. At some point that gets to be a chore rather than a romantic mood enhancer. What is so wonderful on the first crisp day of fall becomes tiresome when the calendar says it's supposed to be spring!

Of course many WW are getting ready for fall weather...for those of you piling up firewood, pulling on your wellies and getting out your winter gear, enjoy! And many WW (Laurie) live in fairly warm zones that don't fluctuate much and have no idea what the rest of us are going on about.

I know what you mean the romance of a wood fire does wear thin after a while.  Last year we moved into a 2 bedroom room structure (5 of us) without a kitchen.     I cooked over an open fire for 7 months, absolutely loved it for the first few months, open skies, watching the sunset etc. romantic all of that  but collecting wood,  trying to get a meal cooked in the cool damp  weather and the smell of smoke after a while was a bit yuk.     We were building a house at the time and now have the luxury of a kitchen.   We still have our campfire set up and enjoy a "camp oven meal" occasionally   but only when we choose to.

We are loving autumn at the moment and soon will be heading into winter, our winters are rather mild rarely frosts but our summers are terrible so it does make for a nice change.

Hi everybody!  Rocks can be beautiful when placed right with the right plants imho.  I was just horrified when I found out that my dh paid $500 for some rocks to be delivered for some rock steps for our side yard.  Never thought it would cost so much!  And that delivery didn't include setting the rocks.  My dh used a backhoe or bobcat or something to do that.  He's in construction, so we've really had a full size backhoe in our yard - I just can't remember what equipment he used to move the rocks.  He's a real go getter and so good to me.
Go rocks!  Especially when they have ponds and waterfalls around them.  We dug a lot of rocks out of our yard, too, b/c we had our house built and they left a lot of rocks in the ground.  Not boulders, small enough to dig out.  What a pain!  I don't like those kinds of rocks.
Can't wait to see Laurie's finished project!  Bet it will be amazing.  (No pressure, Laurie.)
Hugs, Hope

I'm excited the rocks were delivered today, and they should be set in place come Monday.. I'm a little concerned about the ones that dh wanted near the house.. I hope it looks ok cause they are to big to move to a different spot without winning the lottery first :)

If we had plentiful rocks like every other part of the world I'd be happy.  The do look good.. I need to find a day to go out and find some New Zealand Flax for the front area.. I think it will grow there are I don't get a lot of sun.... hopefully the agave, yucca garden will be finished soon.. all it needs is mulch ... always little projects waiting for us each spring

Post by: pam1 on April 01, 2011, 07:29:11 AM
Holli, Sally Hansen extra strength all over body wax kit.  I can get it at the grocery store or pharmacy.  It works pretty well, there's also another one that you don't have to use any strips, just put the wax on and let it dry a bit and pull up the edge to yank off.  That's pretty good too.

And yikes, I could never do a brazilian to myself lol.  I've been waxing my face for so long that it just tickles now, maybe that's the trick.

I get my lip done at the salon with my hair, but the chin never lasted.  I have tried home wax too and never could find one that worked.  I have been playing with threading, and it does work but it's hard to get the hang of on yourself.

it's not cheap.. I've done 4 so far.. all I'll tell my husband is "I'm having a procedure done" lol he'd freak over the cost... to be honest.. I thought I'd have better results for the cost.. but they are telling me that my hair growth lip/chin is hormonal and much harder to treat..  it's estimated that it takes 6 to 10 for good results... that could buy a lot of wax.

It must be Spring if everyone is talking about weed-whacking!

I've had the laser done and it is expensive and it does work (eventually), but it HURTS.  It only works on hair that is in a growing phase - if you've waxed yourself, those are the hairs that come out with a black ball at the root.  And only 20% of your hair is in a growing phase at any given time.  So it takes 10 to 12 sessions (every 8 weeks or so) to get 95% of the hairs.  Also, a whole bunch of things (including the laser) can "activate" dormant hairs and stimulate them to start growing.  So it can be a never-ending battle.

And you're basically zapping the hair root inside your skin, so it hurts and it smells like burnt hair.

AND you can't wax or pluck while you're doing this process, you have to shave (even your chin).

I figured I could easily spend $1000 per year for the next 10 years and then MAYBE I wouldn't be such a sasquatch.  Luckily, DH loves me.  Although, when I came back from my initial consultaion, he DID say "WHen the guy saw you coming, did he take one look and say 'CHA-CHING!'?"

One more funny story - the girl working the front desk was telling me how she had her bikini line done in time for a vacation down south and how much she loved not having to worry about it.   So, uhm, her BOSS, a nice little man, got to laser her bikini line.  UGH  can you imagine?

Why is it that I'm losing hair on my scalp & browline but gaining it on my chin, jawline and above my eyebrows? If it could stay where it was originally I'd be a happy gal. Kind of like losing my butt and gaining a tummy, LOL. What's the point of that, Mother Nature?

"Cha-ching.." Love it. And no, my boss wouldn't be doing my bikini line (also see butt/tummy comment above.) EEwww! Board shorts over a suit cover a multitude of sins. I love getting older, I love getting older, I love getting older.....

Ha ha ha.  Love the descriptions of both Scoop and Pen!  I checked into laser here, and was told exactly what Scoop was saying.  And I about kill over to pay the $130 to get my hair done, so I could not justify to myself the 1200-1500 dollars for the laser.  (Maybe after my house sales?) And I kept getting a mental picture of me walking around with a five o'clock shadow....

Ok, since we have crossed into the realm of "woman world", I have to tell you guys what tattoo I kid my DH with.  I told my DH I was going to get a push mower tattooed, ummm...you know, and just shave a strip across in front of it.  ;D

He laughed and laughed and then said, "UH NOOO!"

Ok.. Pooh  again has taken this convo to a new level :)

Luise will just be proud that I didn't call it "that thing" this time.

And Pen, I figured out how the ones are migrating up above my eyebrows.  It's actually my eyelashes, because they seem to be getting thinner and require more mascara every year.  So I think that's what's up there.

True story... Suzie (who passed away this week at 93) and Mrs Butler who was approximately the same age would sit in the parking lot of their apartment building and help each other pluck little hairs... they said that they had to do it outside for the good light and one would hold a magnifying glass.. I kept thinking that they were going to torch each other or something... Then I watched them doing laundry one day.. they'd put the basket on the ground with only one of two items of clothing in it.. they they'd take turns kicking it down the wall way to the  laundry area... They were so funny together.

Laurie,
Your house, rocks, and tall slender trees are beautiful!  Thanks for sharing your pics.  I love the placement of the boulders at your entrance.  Sorry, I have no idea where to buy the green variegated New Zealand Flax.  I'm certain everything will be picture perfect with your skillful touch.
And all the "hair" talk has been hilarious.....and so true.  I wax my own lip and brows.  I tried waxing my chin, but didn't have much success with that.  I shave my chin - there's too much to pluck. My hair is thinner where I want it and thicker where I don't. I was interested to read that it's pretty typical.
Luise - you crack me up!  I wish your wit came with age, too, but you are one of a kind.
Hugs, Hope

Thanks Julia, I'll look it up.. I just put some of the bronze  NZ flax by my side door... I'm concerned about the amount of sunlight, as they say it prefers full sun .... If I have to I'll switch to something more dangerous like Spanish Daggers ... lol.. that will keep the burglars from climbing through those windows :)

Julia, no we did not design the house.. we had been working with an architect drawing up plans but the price was going through the roof.. we came across this builder and took his plans and kinda revamped them to fit our needs.. this house was suppose to have yet another bedroom on the front, would have made it way to big... The house is very deceiving in size with the carport and that window section on the far left is all garage.

My poor little cactus garden will need to be expanded on as it starts to grow.. it's kinda dinky in the yard... but the 3 little dark green agave are suppose to grow to over 3' tall and 4' wide.. my next door neighbor has one and it's stunning... that's the problem with newer houses, they just look a little naked for a while...

ahhh thanks Nana... this style is pretty typical in the Texas area now.... I was just bent on only having a one story, I don't know if it's lazy or getting older..but climbing stairs.. well I had enough of that in my last house.  Instead of hating stairs I guess we should look at it as free exercise :)

I got up bright and early this morning to mow the yard.. and it's raining... hope it's nicer weather where everyone else is... guess I'll have to stay in and do some internet shopping :)

Thanks LL for the link... oh tell us more about the area where you live.... My last house was just a tad over 100 years old, so I had a taste of having a place that constantly  needs love and attention... It was because of that house (which I really really loved) that we built the exact opposite..  My favorite show is House Hunters International... some of the older homes they show and the countryside is just incredible.  Are you on acreage, as in this being a farm house?

I wish ....more like a fishermans cottage .....just 50 yds from the sea .
Was a small fishing village , now a marina with boats and yachts .
Walls are 3 feet thick , with pantiled roof , exposed beams .
Its , quaint , just the two of us now , so not cramped , not my ideal house , but cosy !

Isle of Man , is a small island in the Irish sea  between England and Ireland .
Famous for speed bike races , and cats with no tails , called manx cats .

LL, your house sounds lovely. I've always dreamed of living in such a place and love movies set in Britain/northern Europe that show them. I suppose the reality of 24/7 living is different than my fantasy, but isn't that true of anywhere? A beach cabana in Bali also sounds romantic but might get old on a daily basis. I'd like to try it, though!

She was a bit insulted when one of the locals said she sounded like Shrek !! From the movie !

I have that lovely combination of South Philly/Pennsylvania Dutch.

"Wooda" = water
"cah"=car
"Dauwg"=Dog
"Taulkin'" = Talking
"Yeah" = Yeeeah
"Yous Guys" = "Ya'll"
"Douter" = daughter

Don't even get me started on dialect. Anyone know what jimmies are? Water ice?

My accent is atrocious. I've been all over the world and I'm always the one  made fun of for mine. LOL.

Pardon my yelling: THE GREATEST CONVENIENCE STORE ON EARTH.

1. Open 24 hours
2. Cheapest Gas
3. Best samiches.
4. Milk shakes are divine
5. A bunch of other reasons that I've heard but can't verify (like the Cops loving the coffee).

It started in a town near me called Wawa.

If you're in the Mid-Atlantic states ever, it's an experience in itself!

Laurie, I've driven past a Bucee's on a road trip but never stopped at one.  So these are all convenience stores and they serve food that is actually good...interesting.  The only place I can think of around here is QT or Race Trac- they serve food, but I have never been brave enough to try it.  But there is a gas station on the way to Austin that has a bunch of different jerky that's really good.  That's about it.  I feel so sheltered...

Nu uh, 7/11 is the best.  Slurpees (which you get free on 7/11) practically the best coffee ever.  Who needs starbucks and its only a dollar or so lol

I am totally being bombarded by slurpee talk!

I never liked those things.

I was drinking my protein shake at work today...some guy goes...."UM....that's better with ice, just like a slurpee." I'm like, "I can't stand slurpees."

Then DH comes strolling in with one.

Now Pam is talking about them.

I might need to cave and try one just to make sure I still can't stand them.

I'm with Laurie - 5 Guys is burger heaven locally.  I'm lucky enough to live in an area where we have WaWa AND Sonic AND 7-11 (and Johnny Rockets, which has the best chili cheese fries on the planet).

And, here I am, eating high fiber, low carb tortillas with fat free turkey breast and low cal string cheese.  What's wrong with me (besides the high cholesterol and diabetes brought on by too much WaWa AND Sonic AND 7-11 AND 5 Guys AND...)?  :D

Red Robin!

We don't have any good convenience stores here.  We do have a Love's Travel Stop to the north and when I travel they are my favorite place to stop for coffee.  The coffee is really good and if you spend the 3.99 for the refillable gallon mug, the refills are 1.59.  Which makes you have to stop at the next Love's after drinking the gallon of coffee....vicious cycle...

Red Robin... Yummmmm

You know that Red Robin (yummmm) has the birthday burger if you sign up.. so does Starbucks (coffee) ... Dairy Queen (ice cream)  Chili's and quite a few other places...  My dh's birthday is tomorrow and we received his free Red Robin-yummm burger cert.   That's a nice savings, shame last time my car went to Red Robin-yummm it was broken into and over 600.00 in damage to my door... buy hey it's unlimited fries right

Yep, I'm signed up for all of them...Lol.  Also, Denny's will give you a free breakfast on your birthday.  Just have to show them your license to prove it's your birthday.

Red Robin also has a rewards card now.  They give it to you, you register it on-line and present it each time you go.  After you buy (I think) 9 burgers, the 10th is free!  I think we are at 8, so the next time we go, one should be free.  Yay.

Laurie, I've never been to Mighty Fine...weird, don't know how I could have missed it spending so much time in the Austin area during college..but we do have 5 Guys.  We have only been twice- don't get me wrong, it is sooo yummy but I can't handle the grease that often.  My poor DH probably gets so tired of me and my eating.  I laughed when you said Red Robin yummmmm because I heard the commercial in my head.  We went to Red Robin last weekend because we had coupons for 2 free meals.  The GM sent them to us after we had a bad experience there- people stole our table (under our last name), then when the hostesses found out they kept seating people ahead of us, then nobody apologized, then they sat us right next to the people who stole our table.   And of course, I asked them if their last name was our last name...because I'm not the type of person to pass up that opportunity.  They said no and acted confused, then said, "Is yours?"  Ummm, well yeah, generally the name I use for seating at a restaurant is, in fact, my real name.

Wow, anyway, we had Red Robin and it was great because I get the veggies and a bunless burger but I can still steal fries from my husband's plate!  :)  I'll need to sign up for the birthday club! :)  DH turns 30 in June, hehe.

And Pam, I NEED Starbucks.  Really.  I need it.  I'm drinking it right now.  Of course, I don't order their really expensive sugary drinks when I go there, I just get a plain coffee and that's not expensive.  But I get their ground coffee and make it in the mornings.  $9.95 for a lb. I think...that's not too bad.

Confession:  I drink my coffee through a straw.  Actually I drink mostly everything except water and clear liquids through a straw.  I saw a dentist on TV once say to do that so your teeth don't get stained from all the drinks we drink.  The only thing I'm stumped on is red wine.  Can't drink it through a straw and can't avoid it hitting my front teeth.  I like white better anyway.

I'll bet that no one looks at you oddly as you are sipping hot coffee through a straw.. don't you burn your throat?  I figure my job is to enjoy life... my dentist is there to keep my teeth white or at least a shade of white.  I'm not a huge straight coffee starbuck's fan... I do like Dunkin Donuts coffee.. and Denny's...   At Starbucks I wait all year for the Pumpkin Spice Latte to resurface.

I like Dunkin Donuts coffee too and it will go on sale all the time by the pound for like 2 bag for 15.00.  We don't have one where we live, but it's in an ajoining City about 20 miles from us.  Any time we are that way, we stop in.  The Krispy Kreme is about 15 miles away.  I'm telling you...it's the truth.  We have all the donut shops on GPS.

Haha, yes I do get odd looks and I always apologize to the person I'm with in case they think it's weird.  I can't drink it right away because it does burn so I wait a few minutes for it to cool a little.  I also eat berries really weird...I cut them so I can bite into them with my molars instead of my front teeth, you know those stain your teeth, too.  I'm weird.

I have a friend who is a costumed performer at her local Renn faire, and has been for 20 years now, so it's really interesting to hear her stories and see all the prep work she does every year (lots and lots and lots of sewing, and rehearsals).  It's kind of like the Society for Creative Anachronism, and LARPing - an awesome community, and tons of fun if that's your thing, but totally inexplicable if it's not.  Just think of it as community theater that's only open once a year, but with turkey legs and ale. :)

Larping?

Is that what I saw the Marines doing on the base one day as I was leaving? They had like, NERF swords or something.

I drove around twice just to check it out one more time. They would do that from time to time after work.

I think the Renn Faire  would have been more fun if not so expensive. I think we spent $100 that day on the two of us.

HB, not unless they were wearing Sailor Moon or Jedi costumes, lol.  If they were smacking each other around with Nerf swords costumeless, then they were just being Marines.  I bet it would technically count as PT or a training exercise.
