Title: Looks like I may have a SIL... so excited
Post by: LaurieS on February 07, 2011, 11:41:15 AM
My dd's bf called me this morning to tell me that he had just purchased a beautiful engagement ring for my baby girl.  She is going to be soooo excited, he didn't say when or how he is going to propose to her, but I know that he's getting help and support (new thing I guess) from the guys in his squad.  Who knows what he has cooked up.. he did say that he'd like to take us out to dinner so he can speak with us before he proposes.. he stopped for a second and asked.. you are going to tell me it's ok? right?

Ahhh to be young and in love.

Right now it's a beautiful sunny day.. the outside temp is 68 in the shade.. I'm going for a walk around the pond..

Bf just called me back and said that he'll bring the ring when he takes us out to dinner to chat with dad.  He really is a special guy.. and has cute dimples to boot.  But he has to stop saying yes ma'am like like I'm getting a ticket.

Fourteen machines with fourteen step boards in between them. I have never seen anyone fall and I've been going since 2005 (off and on) but I would bet you are more talented than most.  ;)

(Truth be told: The off and on part is because I managed to trip over a gust of wind three times causing various fractures here and there.)

Lots of wonderful Curves T-shirts here. Want me to get you one?

Well one thing I can guarantee is that we'll have the best armed wedding in town.

One of my dd's classmates became a professional photographer, she has a quirky eye, but that may blend with the newer age wedding affair.  DD thought that if he ever actually proposes that she'll hire her ex classmate to do the engagement photos to see if they are  a good fit.  She has no clue that he has purchased the ring, and she is getting anxious as Valentine's approaches... he has no intentions of proposing to her on the Vday.

I had to laugh.. I asked him if he ever called his mom to tell her that he's gone as far as to buy the ring.. he said yeah but she was watching the bachelor and asked if he could  call her back a little later.  That just struck me as being humorous.

Laurie, I actually had a police wedding, with 20 something Officers in attendance (It's a small force, thank goodness).  Now, I say police wedding, but we incorporated other things.  But I had an offical guard squad that marched in, and I walked through coming down the sidewalk.  We also exited through them with there batons raised...oh lol.  Let me tell you, I did not know what they were doing...but when I got to the end of the guard, the first Officer stepped over in front of us, blocking our exit, saluted and yelled in this big booming voice, "Halt!  Mrs. XXXXXX".  I didn't know what was up, but then he yelled "Welcome Mrs. XXXXX to the family!"  And the Officer behind me swatted my backside with his baton!  It was priceless and one of my favorite moments.

Oh, I got married on a playground!  Ha ha ha ha ha

Thanks Faith he is ... My dd got some bad breaks off and on throughout  life.. we all do but there were times that she seemed to get more then her fair share.  She always said that she can put up with anything as long as she ended up with someone who truly loves the real her.

The other day she reminded me of a time back when she was playing high school ball.. one little teammate really made a bad play and it cost the game.. It's a game for goodness sake.. but parents were ignoring her, and teammates were getting some little digs in, and this poor little girl was just  crying her heart out... her dad was there but you could tell that he was clueless how to make this better. DD was saying Mom go do something.. so I walked over and gave her a hug and said yep that play changed the game, but it doesn't mean you now have to grow up and marry an ugly man.  Not that that made a whole lot of sense, but I guess it did to her.. Our  inside joke is when ever we screw up...  yes I screwed up but thank goodness it doesn't mean I have to marry an ugly man.

Ok..  I never said that we were normal.

Married on a playground! I LOVE it! Sounds solemn when it should have been, (honor guard,) exuberant when appropriate, (welcome shouts) and silly just for fun (baton swat.) I may need to get married for the sixth time after Val passes just to be more creative. I'm trying to picture how a bunch of Octogenarians could pull it off.  ;D ;D ;D

It was all of the above, and that's what we both wanted.  We wanted a fun wedding that everyone would enjoy.  My cake was lopsided (on purpose) with the bride and groom figures, except the bride was wearing the pants and he is was in boxers!  And I had balloon centerpieces and a candy buffet.  We both had the traditional church weddings the first time, and we wanted this one to relect our personalities.  It was tons of fun.

That is so awesome! And inspired! How reverently irreverent!!  ;D ;D ;D

I think when I hear of the totally ridiculous sums being spent on weddings...and about what the divorce rate is, (which I have contributed to so enthusiastically,) that young couples would do well to not make such a spectacle of it. Cynical? Probably...but/and what if that money had been invested? How about this: "Got elope! We have put $50,000. in an account for you and on your 25th anniversary, it will be yours with compounded interest. And if you don't make it? Oh, well..."

We attended a family wedding in Vermont. Several exorbitantly expensive Bed and Breakfasts in the mountains were taken over for the event, (paid for in full by the bride's family.) It started on Thursday with a Welcome Everyone Dinner...then a Friday Rehearsal Dinner, a Saturday Wedding with a sit down Steak Dinner reception following and a Sunday "Send Off" Breakfast. The Bride was J. P. Morgan's great, great granddaughter (and Val's great niece) and the groom was the nephew of a famous movie star. The marriage lasted 10 months. Anyone want to guess the cost of that event?

Thank you Tara.. but all he's done so far is to buy the ring.. that was a huge step for him :)  But he's called me about 5 times now to talk about it...

I love the candy buffet idea.. I'm going to pass that on to my daughter.. my sister had a ice cream buffet but that can be a touchy gooey mess if not done right.

My dd told me that if he ever does propose that she has worked up 4 different options with budgets and we will sit and discuss this.. I don't know if this guy really knows what he's getting himself into.. she is very  business minded.
Title: Re: Looks like I may have a SIL... so excited

Laurie, the candy buffet was a big hit and we actually had fun doing it.  I was on a low budget, but still wanted to give some kind of favor, but they were so expensive.  So I saw this on a larger scale on the internet, and decided I could do it on a smaller scale.  I used glassware I already had, and purchased some at the dollar store.  Bought big bags of candy and small little celephane bags with ties, and candy scoops.  Everyone went around and filled up their own bag to take home.  And decorated it in black and blue for the Officer's thin blue line.  I bought a bag of plastic policemen (like army men) at the dollar store and set them around it....Lol.  You can get as creative as you want.  I saw on the internet where they had purchased candy, all in their colors.

I will see if I can find a picture of it for you to give you the idea of what I did.

Title: Re: Looks like I may have a SIL... so excited
Post by: Pooh on February 09, 2011, 07:37:37 AM
Laurie, they were made of fondant.  The baker is a friend of ours and he is actually going to be in a cake competition in two weeks, where Duff from "Ace of Cakes" is a judge!  How cool is that.  I think the nacho cheese fountain would be awesome!  That is fun.  I wonder how many different fountains you could get in a reception.  A punch one, a nacho one, a chocolate one...the entire room could be interactive!!!!  Woot woot!

Pen, we had many come up and tell us that was the most fun at a wedding they ever had.  Of course, we wrote our own vows...and umm....mine were about 3 paragraphs long and then he pulls his out...it's 3 pages!  I about died and everyone was laughing.  We decided the vows should be about us and fun too, so in mine was included that I would always remember the "Tour De France" was in July and never complain about going to a car show.  His were worse!  Everyone was laughing one second then crying the next.  It was great!

My son's gf had this really unusual dryer when she was here.. I think she thought this was the exact same thing but it's a little different... but now I have warning stickers all over it and all in japanese.. some could be stickers that they put on to highlight different functions.. but beats me.. so they are all warning stickers.

It was all good because I didn't know what .99 yen a minute equaled to in American dollars, so I skipped those.

I smell a hot loaf of banana bread that is about to come out of the oven for my .. hmmm what do I call him.. future-not-yet-engaged-son-in-law ... I know it's one of his favorites.. this kid loves to eat.. he'll call me at night when he's working and say .. you know I was thinking about your meatloaf today.  Anyone that loves my cooking is good enough for me.. I'm not a wizard in the kitchen.

It's official, my baby girl is engaged to be married.  I can now shorten him from NYEFSIL=not-yet-engaged-future-son-in-law.. to Fsil= future-son-in-law.

My dd had just gotten home from having her hair done, as they have  her gf's wedding to attend.  They were both dressed and looking awfully nice.. when he asked if I could take a couple of picture of them dressed... as I did  he said hey what's missing in this picture... I knew that he was suppose to follow it up with a ring, but he stuttered and asked again.. what's missing in these pictures... Still my dd did not bite.. the third time he asked .. lol.. what's missing here.  I finally said maybe a different pose.. he said yes that is what I need.. meanwhile she is being silly.. shaking her butt at the camera  and as she turns to face him he is on one knee.. she says yes.. that is the pose I want to see, then she realized that he had a ring in his hand.. she didn't wait for him to ask as she is saying thank you.. lol.. I thought thank you?  I did not hear their conversation, but it was obvious that she was pretty darn excited.  Then I hear her say.. is that why you were breathing so hard?
It's hard seeing your baby growing up like that, but I do think that they will both be happy.  I think she is a lucky lucky little girl, he really is a keeper, even if he does eat me out of house and home :)

Just hanging out waiting for the In-laws to wake up now. I'm glad they took a nap, I'd have missed that gorgeous photo!

I hope this means she'll skip the photographer for engagement photos and just use these...these are perfect and so genuine and since they're in the moment, they're priceless! (That's even if she was planning on engagement photos).

I was looking at wedding photographers yesterday.. after I picked myself up off the floor I thought there has to be a different way.... one photographer started at 4k and went to 10... lol.. I don't know who could afford that besides the Clinton's.  Since I can't, I'm going to pass asking Hilary for his name and number.

DH decided to us a high school friend who went pro.. she is still new enough that she is trying to break into the business as a sole source  of income.. yet quirky enough to do something a tad different.... I did tell dh no facebooking until all members of both sides of the family hear first hand.. they both agreed.  But they do both look awfully happy don't they.. and yes I kept saying, are you sure you want me there? I mean wouldn't you rather find a more intimate place and time.  Ahhh to be young and in love, with all the choices of life ahead of you..

Pen - Most of us are fine with it but for everyone to have it available left us with members dropping bombs and then modifying them...even taking out entire posts. It just didn't work. However, I will edit anything, any time. It's one of those things where the minority ruins it for the majority. I'm sorry...but I'll never forget the mess we got into. And I think there have been times since then when some would have done it again, had they had the opportunity.

I understand completely, Luise. I must get over my fear of looking stupid. It's an old, tired issue of mine. How liberating it would be to let go of those critical voices from the past! I don't criticize other posters here for misspellings or typos, and I've never heard anyone else do so either. What the heck am I afraid of??

Some of us were damaged early on by critial adults. The voice stays there forever. I am learning to argue with it. I will say, "Oh, come on, now, give me a break!" And stuff like that.  ;)

DD was just telling me that she takes off all her jewelry when she showers, sleeps, works out at the gym etc.  I  hate to admit to this but I do not wear my wedding ring, first I got hurt badly while wearing it, then I noticed that it got really really hot.. jeweler said it was whatever was mixed with the gold was reacting to my body..  So do you all always keep your rings on, or what reasons would you take them off?
Title: Re: Looks like I may have a SIL... so excited
Post by: holliberri on March 27, 2011, 05:30:05 AM
I don't wear mine. I used to have to take it off for work when I was in the military. I also took them off when I got pregnant. Then I found out I shouldn't be sleeping in them or showing with them. That seemed like too much work.

I have since developed a nickel allergy. Unless it is 24 karat yellow gold or platinum, I break out in a rash on my hands.

And I call myself low maintenance! My jewelry requirements contest that. No more jewelry at all now.

I still feel very married and in love.

About the only jewelry I wear consistently is my diamond necklace.  It has a great chain and I don't worry about it breaking.  If I'm dressing up, etc., I will wear my wedding band, engagement ring and a ruby & diamond ring (birthstone).  For everyday wear I usually wear some $5.00 "diamond" earrings that you really can't tell the difference from the real thing.  I buy cheap stuff to wear when I travel as I don't want to get killed for not giving up my jewelry.

DH has almost never worn his wedding band as he worked in an environment that no jewelry can be worn.  Every now and then he will think to put it on.  I'm just as married with or without it.

My first husband would go ballistic if I "forget" to put it on.  That was a slight to him and that's why he became the ex - not just the ring thing but ridiculously jealousy.

Off topic but important anyway. Titanium....dangerous.

I have seen two men lose their fingers because the hospitals couldn't find something to cut off the ring to stop swelling.

It is getting more popular, and they aren't honest about where it came from. They use that stuff to build rocket engines. Just an fyi for anyone shopping for rings.
Title: Re: Looks like I may have a SIL... so excited
Post by: Pen on March 27, 2011, 10:26:19 AM
I don't have any valuable pieces so I don't worry much about losing them other than for the sentimental value. I don't wear my engagement ring while mixing meatloaf or cleaning the oven, LOL. I probably should be more mindful but I'm such a scatter-brain. DH has never removed his ring (that I know of...)

I agree with FAFE and Holli, I'm just as married with or without the band, but DH gets a little huffy when I forget to put it back on. Also, I don't want the very nosy and observant people I work with to start rumors.

Holli, thanks for the heads up re: titanium. I never would have thought about the dangers.

Thank you Barbie... he made her promise that they could have 24 hours of being engaged before she launched into the wedding planner mode.... it's now 24 hours lol.. I'm sure where ever they are she is talking/planning his ear off :)

The newly engaged couple went scuba diving today to try out some new gear... dd actually took the ring box with her to place the ring in for safe keeping... I have a feeling that this box will be well worn in no time.  They are coming back here for a celebration dinner of thick T-bone steak dinner.. oh I better chill some wine.

I had never heard that Holli... I know that his ring has not been picked out but I think that was one of the metals they were thinking about.. I'll pass along the info about titanium

Laurie, you're so sweet. DD has a couple of slightly higher-functioning peers who've married, so you never know. Right now she's only into phone dating (guys she knows, not strangers) which is just fine with us! She's got a pretty good life w/o many responsibilities, and she knows it. Marriage would mess it all up, LOL. Plus, I think her dad would freak!

I am so happy for her and you both!  Congratulations....and you know I hold a soft spot for them....hee hee....bless her heart...

I wear my wedding set at all times.  I have taken it off when mixing meatloaf or some ooey gooey, like Pen said, but it goes right back on.  I also wear a small ring on my other hand.  When DH and I was dating, it was the first piece of jewelry he bought me when we were on an island.  It is a small blue diamond.  Other than those two, I switch out earrings and necklaces daily.  DH did get a titanium ring, and Laurie....not sure if your DD/FSIL is interested, but it is a special order ring for only a certain occupation.  If you are interested, let me know.  DH loves it!  He can't wear it when he is working either job, because he is in fire and safety on one, so around machinery many times during the day.  Company policy. The Officer job, he doesn't wear it either, for safety reasons.  But he puts it on as soon as he is done.  HB was right about the titanium being hard to cut, but hospitals have the tools to do it now because of it's popularity.  They are even carrying it on the ambulances here.  It is harder to cut, but even gold gives them trouble if it's a finger or hand injury.  Once swelling begins, it's hard to cut any type of ring off (can't get under it).  But DH loves his titanium because he doesn't have to worry about damaging it.

I do, too, Holli.  I figured that out after a minor medical procedure where staples were used.  Beware of staples; they caused a nasty scar.

Oh yeah OW.. these are two active kids... If her bf isn't eating he is moving... Never did I have that kind of energy, it's like they are on a constant red bull high.. this summer they have a wonderful dive trip planned to Cozumel..  I use to dive (back when I could fit into a bathing suit), really loved doing it, but we lived in Florida so it was affordable.. now the gear is outrageously expensive and the trips even more so.. where have you been able to to dive?
Title: Re: Looks like I may have a SIL... so excited
Post by: overwhelmed123 on March 30, 2011, 11:07:35 AM
The only place I've ever been is actually Cozumel, aside from the lake in Terrell that I got certified at.  We just went for my first dive trip (my husband has been lots of times to several different places) to Cozumel in December and I am hooked!  Tell them to be very careful where they eat though.  Stick to their resort's food even if it gets boring.  I ended up in the hospital in Mexico because I got a parasite and literally probably would have died if my DH hadn't taken me to the hospital...so yeah, Mexican hospital..not where you wanna be!  LOL!  And no, I didn't drink the water.  Our last night there, the restaurant at our hotel closed early so we went down the street to get dinner.  The cooks hands must have been contaminated is the only thing I can figure.

BUT, the diving was awesome.  I am so excited for them!  Our group saw 4 black tip reef sharks...luckily everyone else saw them but me because I'm not sure I would have been down for that.

H has been to a bunch of places...Grand Cayman, Hawaii, etc.  I think he said Cayman and Cozumel have been the best.

I think you are suppose to take a shot of Tequila after every bite to wash away the germs.. at least that is how my dd is planning on doing it.

With the crime, food, germs etc I don't think these two will be leaving the place they are staying.. they have 5 days with 15 dives, if they get all of those in, they won't have the energy to even think about wandering the streets
