A Broken Heart

A Broken Heart

My aching heart is broken
Words just cannot say
I’ll be without my grandchildren
Another Christmas day
One year I dared to question
Why my son would decide
To celebrate on Christmas morn
Without loving parents by his side
I wanted to see my grandchildren
And share the Christmas joys
As they open up their gifts and squeal
“Santa brought us toys!”
But I was dubbed Intrusive
And now am forced to pay
With months of alienation
Which includes another Christmas Day
Someday my son’s children
After they have grown
Will choose to start a family
Having children of their own.
And they may begin to wonder
Why they never had
A warm and loving friendship
With the parents of their Dad
How is he to tell them
What is he going to say
Why loving family members
Were forced to stay away
When alas they learn the story
Of how selfish he had been
Will they forgive and let it go
Or do the same to him

Heart-stopping, G. Your poem left me shedding tears for all of us. Thank you sharing it. You were able to poetically express what most of us can't put into words. What a gift! Sending love...

:-*Grammie:  OMG I really loved, lovd your poem. I've been putting some of my pain in poetry too! Isn't it something? I could replace every sentence of your poem with daughter - it absolutely spoke to me. Thank you so much.

Dedicatedmom: I'm glad you like my poem.  It is comforting to write.  It makes a point without the clutter of too many words.  I'm so sorry to hear that you are in a position to relate to my words and that your situation is so much like mine.  Something none of us would have ever expected from our children.  Stay strong.

Thank you Grammie, My youngest DD stopped talking to me 5 years ago, so it has been hard to keep in touch with her three DD's.

We went to their father's house every year and took gifts for birthday and Christmas. This year we didn't as we haven't seen oldest DD's baby since she was a month old. We don't even know her address.

Oldest DD stopped talking to me just after Christmas. Her GD stopped as well so now I can't see my dear two GGC who I have been seeing regularly all their lives. One is nearly 7 the other nearly 5.

I try to get on with life, but there is a big ache in my heart. I miss them and it is a physical pain.

Somebody said to me once, "When they are little they make your arms ache, when they grow up they make your heart ache"

Sad but true for many of us.
