I also did a MIL "Mother's Day card"  with the same cartoon of Scarlett and Brett's mother .... this is a message I wouldn't mind getting!

 What question did Scarlett ask?  Was it: "where shall I go?, what shall I do?"

What did Rhett's Mother pause and not say?  (it's Rhett, by the way)

for copyright reasons, I am afraid to say Rhett....(copyright stuff lasts 70 years AFTER the death of the author).....   I thought if I used Brett and Scarlett, with Mrs. Butler as the mother (that's inside the card) people would realize it's a parody -- maybe I should take the risk (gulp).

Scarlett is saying "Tell me honestly, what do you think of it?"

Mrs. Butler is thinking "I didn't even like it when it was a curtain".

You open it and there is more...

I added another set with Rhett on it -- if it gets kicked (I've had things rejected after someone has ordered them because of things like that)... at least someone can order the Brett one...

Rhett is made up but the character belongs to Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone with the Wind...it's her character, so she and her heirs own it til  2019, which will be 70 years after her death.

It might be OK to use it... it might not... I hate to have a customer buy the Rhett one and then the printer refuse to print it due to copyright violations!

But thanks, glad you found it amusing... I'm trying to come up with a line of Wisdom of the Mother in Laws (that's us!!)...

But, Scarlett is a Margaret Mitchell name too.  Why can you use Scarlett's name and not his?   

I'm a writer, so I know that if you change one little letter, it is not a violation.  People have done that to me for YEARS!!!  I'm not advocating you doing it, though.

If you said, "Scarlet", leaving out the extra "t", it might work.

Yes, I'm a writer too. 

Changing his first name should be enough.  Theoretically, I've used Brett Butler (because his mother's last name as I've done it is Butler).

I only used Scarlett, not her last name.

As it is, I'm skirting a thin line.  However, the Mitchell estate is pretty fierce, they sued someone who wrote a parody .. so the whole thing might get nixed.. you never know.

Your'e right....shouldn't risk it.  It's a shame, though. Can you write for permission to the estate to use the names?

What an interesting conversation! I learned a lot! Not that I will ever use it...but I'm a writer, too...of sorts. I suppose we all are.
